which port is the best to use

Post by 416eddie »

I have been using the MAC version of softphone for many months now with no problems. I have been using port 13000 for the audio port in the software and have these ports forwarded in my 2wire modem/router from Bell:
TCP 5060-5061
69.158.87.61
UDP 5060-5061
69.158.87.61
TCP 6060-6061
69.158.87.61
UDP 6060-6061
69.158.87.61
TCP 13000-13001
69.158.87.61
UDP 13000-13001
69.158.87.61 Starting last week when I make a call I get very choppy signal, and sometimes the other end just hears a lot of static on the line. I have a Imac running OS 10.6.3. Any help ?????

To answer the question in the subject of your post, you have all the proper ports currently setup. However, TCP ports are not required, you could forward only UDP, but that's doesn't change anything.

Choppy sound is one of two things, insufficient bandwidth (traffic), or latency (delay).

Try calling your voicemail (*98). Is the sound you hear choppy? Navigate the menus around for a few minutes to make a good measurement. Then try to call someone, can YOU hear them choppy?

If any of the previous test shows choppiness, it means your download link is congested.

If the choppy sound is your voice, as heard by the people you call, then that mean your upload is congested.

In any case, are you using other applications on your computer or other computers? Any download/upload running? Torrents?

You could try a full reboot too. Unplug the power of the 2wire modem for 30 seconds, then plug it back. At the same time, reboot your mac (apple menu, restart). And then try again with a call.

Now I have one more question for you. Have you noticed a difference in the problem between when you make an outbound call and when you receive a call?

Hi
Thanks for the feed back . I always stop any other internet applications when I use the phone to make calls , so I dont think it is the upload bandwidth issue. The sound is choppy on both ends but seems to be worse for the people on the other end of the line. I will try some of the test calls , but for the most part I use this as an outgoing call phone anyway. I will get back to you about the test results .

Thanks
