Alarm Systems
Hi There,
I was wondering if the FPL service will work with an existing alarm system that worked through Rogers home phone? I have ported my number from Rogers and am currently using the FPL service. I have woken up a few mornings when my alarm system is beeping with a code of FC which I looked up and its a communication error. I called the alarm company and asked about this and they were unsure of who FPL is and if the setup/configuration I have is working. They requested that I test the alarm system by setting it off and calling them to see if they got the signal or not. Im not really wanting to do that but I have noticed that the mornings that the alarm system was beeping was when the FPL service was down and not working hence a communication error. I armed and disarmed the alarm system and as long as the FPL is up and running the alarm panel does not beep.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Pete

Re: Alarm Systems
Maybe. Freephoneline does not support it though, so if it does not work, you have to grin and bear it.

Re: Alarm Systems
Try setting the codec to PCMU (G.711) instead of G.729. This might help with your setup issue

Re: Alarm Systems
Although FPL VoIP may work for alarm system signal, but I personally don't recommend to count on VoIP phone line for alarm system as there is no certain of when the system will go down and out of service. Also there is no certain of the UDP will be delivered without error or glitch to the destination.
It is not worth to save this little money and it is not there when you need it most (in case or break and enter).
I would suggest to stick with the traditional phone line for alarm system.

Re: Alarm Systems
Now this is my personal opinion, but I'm not sure a central-connected alarm system will do any good for the 3 minutes it takes a robber to grab what he wants

Re: Alarm Systems
I signed up to NextAlarm.com . They will sell you an ABN device with custom firmware which will convert your oldtech alarm system so that it connects through your internet. Service is pretty cheap too. I recommend them.

Re: Alarm Systems
X10.COM sells a good alarm system. It is also connected to a second FPL account that i dedicate just for the alarm. Also this alarm calls you and 3 of your friends if you wish. had mine over a year now and works perfectly.

Re: Alarm Systems
For a second FPL phone line to work, is an ATA needed? If so, can the same ATA (I have the Linksys SPA 3102) be configured to work with both lines, and how is this done?
