LINPHONE or other Linux SIP Phone app

Post by Timmi »

Does anyone have experience / know-how in configuring Linphone?

I purchased my password (FPL "config file"), and would like to give Linphone or another Linux SIP VOIP application a try.

I also found Ekiga, Qutephone, and others under Ubuntu that are available for install.

I used the Twinkle phone fairly successfully on a Ubuntu box here. It is not the prettiest, but it worked.

I have not personally played with these Linux sip phones, but I have played with the windows counterparts, some of which have a linux version also. I see no reason why any of them would not work with freephoneline. If you do have problems, it is usually NAT/firewall related, and rarely is the softphone to blame.

I'll be glad to try anything that just works. Could you please tell me:
What do they consider as "SIP proxy" in the setup?
What is a STUN server? Do I need that?

Edit: added a day later, I have twinkle installed, and it stalls... goes grey, hangs, then comes back. It does this constantly. I'll have to look elsewhere. Sooo... back to LINPHONE...

in Linphone, it asks for a SIP proxy address, such as sip:username.proxydomain (such as Alice@example.net), but the config file sent to me did not include such information. Does anyone know what to put there?

experience with sip client on ios, android as well as symbian are all positive:

Inbound/Outbound Proxy: voip.freephoneline.ca
stun server: stun.ekiga.net or any public stun server
