More of a question than a problem report...
I have ported my home number to Freephoneline, bought the Thomson 784 router/ATA, and 2 things I have noticed:
- slight high pitched tone / static which did not exist before on regular phone line
- when making a call, press Talk on Panasonic cordless, dial tone comes right away, when finished pressing the 10 digit phone number, it takes approximately
20 seconds for ringing tone on the other end to start
I am new at VOIP and just wondering were these two conditions normal? Is it a tweak in the 784 (pre-configured by Freephoneline)?

Re: Noise on line
In terms of the high pitched tone, I'm going to try and point the problem to your Thomson ATA. I've used Linksys ATAs and other VoIP phones and haven't come across this problem.
When making a call on your phone, it depends on the dial plan and ATA. Many times, there is a pause/delay "just in case" you dial more numbers that could mean something. If you can configure your dial plan, you may tell it to expect certain quantity of numbers. Easiest, try pressing pound (#) after you're dialing and it usually starts connecting immediately.

Re: Noise on line
I'm not sure where to start looking in the settings of the router / modem / ATA combo.
Tried the #, didn't work.
Perhaps a call to technical support is in order.

Do you get high pitched tone if using wired telephone?

It's the same with corded or cordless.

Re: Noise on line
Update...I called tech support, and they were not aware of any setting in the Thomson 784 that would cause the static / tone I am experiencing.
So far, I have tried different phones (corded and cordless), disabled wireless in modem, plugged the phone / modem / phone and modem into different plugs.
I also have a Magic Jack on this computer and the sound quality is perfect, so I'm sure there is no line noise issues (dry loop dsl).
Is it possible it could be the modem / ATA itself? Any help appreciated.
I also noticed someone else posted about the long delay in connecting calls, so I am obviously not the only one who noticed this.

Re: Noise on line
For the long delay when dialing, as mentioned above, it's probably your dialing plan that needs to be changed a bit. I don't recall the exact fix, so perhaps someone else can either post it, or you could search around.
For the noise, did you try to FPL software and see if you also get the same noise with it?

Re: Noise on line
dm1a, I'm honestly starting to think that the Thomson 784 unit from FPL has a problem (pitched tone). I was experiancing the same problem and ended up getting tired and bought a used Thomson 780 from fleebay. The problem was instantly solved . I am not sure if it is the firmware on the 784 or just poorly designed hardware but I would love to find a solution as the 784 unit is not cheap.dm1a wrote:More of a question than a problem report...

Interesting...think another call to tech support is in order.
Can one of the freephoneline mods jump in here with an opinion?
