Shaw Direct Motorola DVR-630 HD

Hi,

Does anyone know if freephoneline will work with Shaw Direct's (formerly StarChoice) Motorola DVR-630 HD PVR (satellite personal video recorder)? The PVR has a phone jack on it. Basically, the connection would just be for ordering PPV movies, events, etc., I guess. I'm guessing data is transmitted over the phone line (kinda like a fax) when you order a PPV using the remote control.

I called Shaw Direct's technical support line and was asked, "What's Voice Over IP?" :shock:

Really?... Late 2006(?) Shaw Communications launched it's own 'Digital Phone Services' which is not too unlike Rogers "digital" phone services; far be it from me to cast judgment upon them, but last time I checked they were using the same Motorola SBV5120 VOIP cable modem my Rogers connection is running on... To answer your question, your DVR should work as long as you are able to support it yourself, unfortunately we'll be unable to provide direct support.

Sounded like a young, uniformed lady I was speaking with (possibly a new hire). I tried explaining that voice data is transmitted over the internet and that I was speaking to her using a VOIP provider. Think I blew her mind

I think that modem is pretty slow (in the range of 1200 bauds / bps) so I guess it would be pretty tolerant to poor phone lines
