Included call features? Recommended ATA?

Post by Ssseth »

I'm seriously considering signing up for this service but one last thing is stopping me. I can't find a list of features that are included anywhere? I've spent the last hour or so reading all around the site and was surprised not to run across it yet since you'd think it would be a common quesiton. Sorry if it's somewhere obvious and I just missed it. I'm planning on buying an ATA and hooking it up to my existing phone that has a base with 3 handsets around the home.

The main features I use/need are caller ID, visual call waiting, voice mail and 3 way calling (although this one isn't a deal breaker, I've found it handy sometimes). I've seen caller ID and voice mail mentioned but not sure on the call waiting which is really important to me on a phone service.

One last quesiton since I'm already posting this thread. Is there a recommended ATA device? I was thinking of getting the one off this website (Grandstream ATA HT286) but reading around on VOIP a lot lately I've seen a lot of mention of folks buying the Linksys PAP2T. What is the advantage of trying to get one of those over the Grandstream (besides the second phone port which I don't think I'll ever need)?

Thanks in advance for any replies! :D

Caller ID works, visual call waiting is not working for me, but that could be a misconfiguration on my part. Voice mail works. Never used 3 way calling.

I prefer the HT286 over the PAP2 because the HT286 can handle NAT better. The PAP2 is not a device you would have regrets buying either, once configured properly. Usually the router is what gives the most problems with SIP VOIP. Some routers will never be able to meet the needs of SIP VOIP, so a new router is something you might have to consider. Saying that, most people have no problem with the router they have, unless it is vile crap like Belkin gear.

I do not know if freephoneline will cover all your needs, but I can say it is worth the $50.

Thanks for the reply.

Even if it's not visual call waiting but just the regular one where I can hear a beep for the other line I'm fine with that. Anyone else have any feedback on features such as call waiting or 3 way calling?

For the ATA box, is the call quality better on one over the other? That's the main thing I'm worried about.

I do not think I ever came across an ATA with bad voice quality. It is usually the quality of your internet connection that determines the quality. Try this test here to give you an idea of what you VOIP quality will be like. http://myspeed.visualware.com/servers/n ... erate.com/

Thanks, looks like I should be fine. I wasn't too worried about that though as I have always had a pretty solid internet connection. I'm with Shaw on their Extreme package and get 25 Mbps dl and 2.5 Mbps ul and will be upgrading to their 50 MBps dl service after I move. Using that test it looks like I should be fine (under 2ms and 0% packet loss). I'll make sure to setup QoS and such on my router as well since I am a heavy torrent user. I'll also manually cap torrent traffic (in uTorrent) to no more than 50% of my dl and ul speed on top of using QoS.

I think I'll go with the Linksys unit since it's about the same price and seems to have more of a community out there in terms of support. Even on these forums there are a lot more posts in the Linksys thread compared to the Grandstream one.

So no one knows the answer to my question about call waiting? I might have to go with a different service if I can have that setup with freephoneline.

All features work as far as I know. Even call transfer (almost like three way but you get to hang up)
Call Waiting display works. The only thing that isn't working is the fax .38 service or a way to fax digital without the need of a fax modem which sucks.

This is a must have service that everyone should have for free, for life at child birth, even a cell phone and access to the internet should be free also via DSL or cable. One less thing to worry about (paying the bill/having it set up) its just there always on. but in my opinion you should also have a backup service like a cell phone for an emergency. You never know when FPL or even your cell provider is going to take a shit. I also use MJ just for a long distance service provider and use there forwarding to dial out to the cities that aren't covered by FPL but for the time I use MJ it just isn't worth it. I like it better when you could use MJ in your ATA hence the forwarding feature.

Nice thanks, good to know. Both my wife and I have a cell so that's part of the reason why we are looking for a cheap home number. Doesn't make sense anymore to pay so much for home service when we already have cell phones. We still like the convenience though of having a home line for non family/friends.

I'll be putting in my request to port my number tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Oh and I think I'll go with their device since a rep said they can't help me troubleshoot if I have the Linksys device. :(
