I have my regular Bell land line phone and FPL and another VoIP provider hooked on a two line telephone through my ATA which is connected to my modem (4 ports 2Wire). All calls, when not answered, are sent to my voice mail box which is a software on my PC.
At night I shut off my PC (so the answering machine cannot answer) and also disconnect the modem (ATA) from the wall 110v outlet (so VoIP calls should not get through). Just my Bell phone stays connected.
Yesterday night at almost 3:00AM My Bell phone starts ringing non-stop waking me up. Instead of answering I go open my PC so the answering machine would answer.
When I arrive in my PC room I find that not only my Bell phone is ringing (which is normal) but also my two VoIP lines (which that is strange as the modem/ATA is disconnected).
Then the answering machine takes the call. When I listen to it there is no way to understand what is said but there effectively is a message and it sounds far away and through some sort of can (like soup can).
Also, although I have no message on my VoIP lines the 2 lines light are blinking as if there were calls on it. I try to remove the blinking lightrs and only phone 1 goes off. Phone 2 is still blinking although the display clearly says L1 and L2 n00 new calls.

Clearly, you're delusional and require medical help...
Just kidding! The only thing I can think of is if your PC wakes up on phone calls, as many often did when we actually had them plugged in for those dialup modems. If a call answered and some softphone was running, then it could answer part of it? I'm not entirely sure of the exact details of what happened (confusing to follow?) but this seems to fit part of it...??
Another thought... what was the weather like? Maybe some power disruptions did something funny. I know this is old so likely a non-issue now, but has it happened since?
Then again, aliens seem to visit me once and a while. Thank goodness for tinfoil hats!
