Loud noisy sound both sides

Post by aloetic@gmail.com »

The problem has been about a week now. My fpl makes loud noisy sound that can be heard on both ends. Occasionally, the voice is very clear again. But most of the time, including now, the noise makes the conversation impossible. I tried resetting the modem and the router, but nothing helped. I called support, he suggested me to change something about the router. But I have been using this ATA for 3 years and the fpl number for a year without any problem like this, and I never changed any settings. It worked perfectly fine.
Has anyone else reported the similar problem recently?
Thanks

Hi Steve/Mike,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask for help. The exact problem started from last week again. It's literally impossible to have a conversation over the phone. Everything remains exactly the same as above.
Could you please help me figure out what is wrong? This number serves as my home phone, so please!

Thank you!

what sort of noises are they? Crackles, broken / distorted /choppy voices, pops, whistles, etc.

I am guessing this happens with all your calls, rather than just to one person. So have you tried a different phone? It could be your house wiring (if you are using it) so try plugging the phone straight into the ATA. Another thing that comes to mind is that the ATA is breaking down. Is it possible you can either try a different ATA, or take your ATA to a friends house and try from there.

It could also be your setup/connection, but I think I would try the simple things first as you say it has been working for years before.

The sound is like the running heavy machineries whenever it's connected. It happens to both incoming and outgoing calls to all numbers. Last year, the problem disappeared after 1 or 2 weeks without changing anything. That makes me believe that the problem was on the fpl server side.
I have tried using a different phone. My ATA has another port configured to voip.ms for international calls, which is working fine.
I would imagine the same thing happens if I take my ATA to my neighbour's home. I will try that this weekend even though I have no hope on that. Thanks for the suggestions.

It's got to be something happened at the server side. I planned to do something with it this weekend. But the problem disappeared today without doing anything at my side yet.
Similar as last year, it's been about 2 weeks again this time. I wish it would never happen again because it's really annoying.

I think voip.ms uses fairly sophisticated NAT traversal methods so perhaps the problem that you get in still related to NAT traversal and that is how it seems to me. I am not sure about you SIP device and could not find out a lot about it but did find one comment to the effect that running STUN solved the problems.
