Fax support?

Post by AndreiPR »

Hi all!

I wonder if somebody use Freephoneline to send and receive Faxes. :?:

I wrote to Freeponeline support and received this message:
Hi,
We do not support fax service.
Regards,

However, I wonder if somebody tryed it, because even if Freeponeline does not offer Fax support, it can works theoretical... :)

Faxing might or might not work, depending on the quality of your internet connection, using the g.711u codec. There is no way freephoneline would be able to guarantee the quality because of multiple variables beyond their control.

Thank you bridonca for the answer! ;)

I think in 2011 you can't have a poor quality of the intertnet at home ;)
So, the only problem that I see it's the codec for the Voip and the hardware that the customer use at home.

G-711U is the best for Faxing and I use it now with my Voip provider.
Do you now what codec uses Freephoneline by default and if there is possible to change it?

If you use the same company that provides phone service and Internet service, it is amazing how crappy your VOIP can be. Funny how that works.

Freephoneline supports both g.729a and g.711u It is your ATA that selects the codec as it's default.

Hi,
Thank you for your answer again. If freephoneline supports both codecs it's great! :-)
It's seems that fax may goes by voip.
I'm using two different company:one it's for internet an dry loop and another for my voip.
And it works fine for the fax by the phone voip even if my voip provider does not support the fax service official!
That's why I hope it will work with the freephoneline too... :-)
I red on the dslsupport that somebody tryed already to do it and it worked even if the service can have a bug sometimes :-)

Thanks again bridonca for the informations.

I just wanted to let everyone know, that after a small little test using an online free fax service, that I did indeed SUCCESSFULLY receive a fax directly to my FPL number.

What would you like elaborated on? There has been a lot of ground covered in this thread ...

If you just want to receive faxes reliably most* the time, then pretty well do NOTHING; set the account to copy/forward voicemail messages to email, and then you will know when that account has received a fax - log in and check it.

Of course, if you intend to use that line for anything else, then there are more things to consider. Some 'real' fax machines work with some ATAs correctly, some do not.

All that said, there are always SOME incoming faxes that cannot be received correctly -- I have had this even with POTS/fax machines setups, where it just refused to connect or came in all scrambled. Damn technology! ;-)
