support for "310" numbers

Post by TheHardy »

I am well aware that "310" numbers are not traditional numbers, but rather special routing arrangement numbers within certain geographical areas. That said, I am also aware, that dialing them from a traditional POTS line, using the area code, you CAN dial into them correctly.

For example, from Vancouver area, where I am, if I dial either 310-xxxx or 604-310-xxxx, I get connected correctly, using POTS.
Also, still using POTS from Vancouver, if I dial 403-310-xxxx or 780-310-xxxx to an ALBERTA based 310 number (one which is NOT generally available from BC), I do get connected correctly (ie: to the 310-0000 AB govt number). Experience with wireless technology is less than repetative. Sometimes dialing with the area code works, sometimes not.

What I am wondering is, is there way for FPL to support this dialing as well?

The reason I am asking, is that for some 310-numbers, there is no easy translation number available. As these are indeed "free" calls within the calling area that they are assigned to, I do not see a COST issue arising.

Thanks for any input.

The major difference between POTS and VOIP that makes this more difficult is that VOIP is decentralized. Where as every POTS line connects back to a switch that resides in the same city/region as the subscriber, VOIP lines often connect back to one switch that could be at the opposite end of the country as the subscriber. This makes location aware services, like 310 numbers, much more difficult to setup.

At present time we don't support these services, but I will certainly pass along the information that the request is there and perhaps in the future this could be made available.
