Telephone number porting & address change

Post by radio »

Hiya,

I did a search for address change but was not able to find this information. I have setup FPL for my father and ported his existing number over... He may be moving (within the province) to a different city with a different area code (which is local to the existing area code that was ported over).

My question is just like bell or rogers or telus would make one pick a different number, would this apply to FPL also and would he lose his ported number?

Or would he be able to change the 911 info and keep the rest same and have his old ported number follow him?

Number stays with you & stays the same. Remember that it is NOT physically attached to the address -- it is VOIP. Your second paragraph is correct, simply log into the account and change the relevant information.

To the best of my understanding, this would also be the case EVEN if you were moving outside the local traditional calling area (ie: moving from Montreal to Vancouver, or even say to Kelowna (where FPL has no real local lines...)

I am in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and even though there are no incoming numbers here, I can still register an account with my real address here in Halifax. Freephoneline insists upon it for 911 reasons. They eventually catch incorrectly inputted addresses and get them corrected. I had mine say Ontario for the longest time, because the form at one time would not allow me to input Nova Scotia. Once that little problem got fixed, I was notified that my address needs editing, so I did.

He can take his current number anywhere in the country with him! Just, as everyone has said, make sure to update his address on freephoneline.ca to ensure 911 services have the correct information. See www.freephoneline.ca/911 for further details.

If he's changing cities, this makes it very convenient for people in his old city to call him without needing to call long distance!

Only downside to that scenario would be that for people to call him in his new location would now be a LONG DISTANCE call to them, unless they also had a way to get around making chargeable long distance calls.

In that case, if you WANTED to change your phone number, you would have to again pay (potentially) a porting charge and then re-purchase a new ATA config file for the new phone number.

However, as that is not the case here, you are free and clear and smooth sailing! :)

Quick easy solution would be just to get another sip file pay $50 and have one local to the new Area code and keep the other so its local to the previous :). Basically have two physical phones.

You said that where he may be moving is local to the number he ported, so maybe you won't have a problem.

Yes, radio originally posted that the move was local, and within the calling area, so it is all a moot point, easily dealt with.

I was pointing out the "flip" side and worst case scenario, in which case FPL would not have a local number available in the new location, which would then require a port and config file.

Hope that clears things up.
