Difference Between Allocated Bandwidth using ATA & SoftPhone

Hello,

Currently I am using only FreePhoneLine SoftPhone software, but I am thinking to upgrade it by using ATA.

1- I am wondering if your company (FPL) considers different Allocated Bandwidth between using ATA and using only soft-phone?

2- Is there any improvement in call quality if using ATA instead of SoftPhone?

If you are having problems with sound quality, in most cases, it is your internet service provider that is the issue, and usually not Freephoneline. Here is a site to test the quality of your connection, you should test it regularly. http://myspeed.visualware.com/servers/n ... erate.com/

The voice codec that comes with Freephoneline's free softphone is called G.711u or ulaw. It is an excellent codec quality wise, but it is a bit hard on the bandwidth, and it has practically no tolerance to jitter. If you have a good internet connection, G.711u should be fine.

When you purchase Freephoneline's SIP settings, you also have the ability to use G.729, a much more robust codec. It uses quite a bit less bandwidth, and is much more tolerant to jitter. The voice quality is slightly less than with G.711u, but one would be hard pressed to actually notice the difference.

As I said before the quality of your Internet service provider has more to do with the quality of your ISP than any carrier such as Freephoneline. There is no reason for your connection to be that bad, so drive your ISP nuts to fix it. It likely will not happen tomorrow, but they will fix it.
