How to use 3 way calling / conferencing

Before I signed up for the service I was told that 3 way calling is a supported feature. I bought the grandstream ATA from FPL and use newer Panasonic phones.

To do three way calling on my old telephone service with Telus I would call the first person, press the flash button, call the second person, then press flash again and that would connect the two calls together.

I tried that today and while I could call the second person, on the last step when I press flash to try and connect the calls alls it does is switch between the two calls. It doesn't connect them.

Ok, I asked my teenage daughter how to do 3-way calling in FPL.

It's basically the same as your old phone except that in order to connect to the second party, you have to press the number (#) sign after the phone number (do not press the flash button at this stage). When second party answers, that is when you tap the flash button to connect the 3 parties. Enjoy your free 3-way calling!

Yes I agree, I'm a little disapointed at the lack of response from a member of FPL staff as it has been quite a few days.

Thanks for the suggestion but that didn't work. I used # after the number, got the second person on the line and pressed flash and all it did was still just switch between the two callers. It didn't connect them.

Sorry to hear that what works on my FPL phone does not work for you. That just shows that VOIP can be a different beast in different a place.

On the Grandstream HT-286 you'll want to:

Dial Party A
Press flash/hook, dial *23, then immediately dial Party B
After Party B answers, press flash/hook again to join the calls

This may vary depending on your ATA - the above is only for our own hardware.

I got this from the HT-286 manual (I don't use the HT-286):

Bellcore Style 3-way Conference

Bellcore style 3-way conference is also supported. To do this, user needs to enable “Use Bell-style 3-way
Conference” in ADVANCED SETTINGS web configuration.

Assuming that call party A and B are in conversation. A (HT-286) wants to bring C in a conference:
1. A presses FLASH (on the analog phone, or Hook Flash for old model phones) to get a dial tone.
2. A dials C’s number then # (or wait for 4 seconds).
3. If C answers the call, then A presses FLASH to bring B, C in the conference.
4. If C does not answer the call, A can press FLASH back to talk to B.
5. If A presses FLASH during conference, C will be dropped out.



It could be that your Advanced settings was not set to use Bellcore-style 3-way conference.

In my situation, I tried *23 but it didn't work.

I also tried this way: (posted on another forum)
1.While on the first call, dial the 10-digit number of the second person.
2.Press SEND; the first person is automatically put on hold while the call is made.
3.When the 2nd person answers, press SEND to create a conference call.
4.If the second person does not answer, press the SEND key twice to end the connection and go back to the first person.
5.To end both conversations completely, press the END key.

But that only worked using my cell phone.

So I noticed I got a dial tone after just pressing * so I punched in the other number instead of including 23, and it seemed to work.

Dialed person 1, pressed *, dialed person 2, pressed send. Seemed to work for me.

That almost qualifies as coming back to the most simple answer! Why bother with fancy dialing strings, just use the "*" key ... lol
