Anyone uses Public Mobile? Experiences between PM and FPL
Hey guys,
I was wondering if one of you guys have (and/or utilised) a mobile (cell) phone provider called "Public Mobile" (service is only limited to Toronto and Montreal with coverage expanding through the Quebec City-Windsor corridors in Quebec and Ontario respectively)? and how did you manage to overcome the obstacles associated on dialing a FreePhoneLine phone number?
Either if you signed up with a completely new phone number provided by Public Mobile or ported your number (from another provider) - what was your experience on working out with the FreePhoneLine service.
I don't use Public Mobile myself, but I want to provide some input that many people may find useful.

Can you try today? A few updates were done on our calling tariffs this morning and this one appears to be correct now.

Can you cite specific exchanges in 343 that you are having difficulty with?lifeisfun wrote:Lucky you, I still can't call area code 343
343-nxx-yyyy (we just need the nxx part) ...
verify that it is a free calling city, check here:

Let us know ... and if it is not tariffed correctly, I suggest you PM the NPX-NXX to Steve to sort out!

Just on a side note - when I see lists like that, where not many numbers have been taken from an area code; I would expect numbers that customers would want to go first.TheHardy wrote:lifeisfun wrote: http://www.cnac.ca/data/ac343.htm
Numbers like
343-333
343-444
343-434
I think everyone I know would like a 'good' phone number, so wouldn't starting off with a number like this make your numbers worth a bit more to a customer? Or is that the problem? These numbers are more expensive to register in the first place.
Just wondering.

Primo numbers
From a post I made to Steve and Kris several months ago, from what I understand, a CLEC/WLEC/whathaveyou makes a request to CNAC/Telcordia for NPA-NXX assignment in a given ratecentre and can request a specific NXX or from a given NPA (if not in jeopardy/exhaust) -- this request does NOT have to be honoured, but can be, solely at the discretion of CNAC/Telcordia/Neustar when the NPA-NXX is assigned.Jake wrote:Just on a side note - when I see lists like that, where not many numbers have been taken from an area code; I would expect numbers that customers would want to go first.

You may notice in the new NPA's that certain carriers will try to get the same blocks of numbers (Globalive/WIND likes the NPA-N00 exchanges, DAVE/Mobilicity seems to go for the low 700's). Once established in an NPA, some carriers like to group together as much as possible, or at least get "sets" of numbers. Other times, they try to group ratecentres together regardless of carrier.
In a new NPA, I find it it amazing that the "harder to assign" NXX's are not used FIRST (if assigned by CNAC/T/N) -- ie: "Limited availability outside of _____ calling area"; if it were ME, I would assign those first and get them out of the way, as the first requests are usually the larger metro areas, and the limited availability one usually the smaller rural outlying areas. IMHO anyways.
We now return this topic to it's original position ....

From your FPL line at 343-883-xyza you cannot call to WHICH numbers??
Calling OUT from your FPL line to certain exchanges means a MISCONFIGURATION on the FPL side of things ....
Other people not being able to call you at YOUR FPL # means that THEY need to dial 6-1-1 and speak to their carrier's ROUTING department (in NOC - Network Operations Centre) and have then check to make sure that they have "loaded" 343-883-xxxx ratecentre as being INSERVICE. That could mean Bell, Telus, Mobilicity, Wind, etc .... find out who the carrier is and then get those people to raise stink with them.
Sorry it is not a complete solution, but we can help you nail down the problem!

Update .... 343-883
Odd .... okay, there is an FPL problem here too ....
Just fired up my softphone, and tried 343-883-0000, 1-343-883-0000 as well as a few other dummy -xxxx numbers and they all FAILED -- that is the call status.
FPL has not even added their own exchange to their routing table/tariff --- I have PM'd Steve on this!

He will look in to it Monday.

That's almost incompetent!
This part might be worth following up on with Steve as well, if you specifically noted in your report to Support that it was only calls to certain numbers that were FAILING -- opening ports on the router is not at all related to that issue and is, IMNSHO, misleading and poor support. Not quite negligent, but along the lines of going into the doctor with an unexplained severe migraine and being told that you need to clip your toenails on a regular basis to cure it.lifeisfun wrote:BTW the support guy on the phone told me that I new to open more ports on my router... cough, cough

Opening the ports on your router/modem is most usually in regards to allowing your ATA device to connect to the server or to help in certain cases with audio issues. It would still be a good idea to make sure they are open however to help avoid any other possible issues.

Re: Anyone uses Public Mobile? Experiences between PM and FP
Hi sncbhle18,
There should be any issues in dialing our phone numbers from another provider. We do not block any other providers TN's from being able to reach our customers.
In regards to porting a number out of Freephoneline, it would work the same way as with any provider. When you sign up with them and make the request to port, they would likely ask you to confirm certain information and then process the request for you. The time line on doing it may vary according to the new service provider you are selecting (Bell, Rogers, Public Mibile, etc, etc).

Re: Cannot make outbound calls to Mobilicity Mobile numbers
Understood, and well acknowledged -- however, suggesting a router-port correction in regards to a call not completing and generating a CALL FAIL message is akin to offering a man with a bleeding head wound a glass of water to fix the problem --- no doubt the water will help in the long run, but it does nothing for the underlying problem.fpl-mike wrote:lifeisfun wrote:I actually contacted Steve as well after having ticket opened for over a week with no results.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm talking about making outbound calls to Public Mobile phones and I was wondering if we had users trying to make outbound calls to PM phones or receiving inbound calls from Public Mobile phones.fpl-mike wrote:Hi sncbhle18,

Re: Anyone uses Public Mobile? Experiences between PM and FP
As was stated, there is no "block" in place. In the 'past', some new NPA-NXX's (ratecentres/exchanges) have been SLOW to be added to the outbound tariff -- and that goes BOTH ways.sncbhle18 wrote: Thanks for the advice, but I'm talking about making outbound calls to Public Mobile phones and I was wondering if we had users trying to make outbound calls to PM phones or receiving inbound calls from Public Mobile phones.
Whenever you place a call, whatever provider YOU are using checks it against their tariff (which is a big chart of all the NPA-NXX's) to see if it free or toll, and what the rate is. If this tariff is wrong, either the call will fail (as with Telus - you get a "Your call cannot be completed as dialed") because it is not recognized as valid, or you get an error message (FPL - "your balance is insufficient to call that destination) because FPL "assumes" that unless SPECIFIED all calls are toll (and from what I can see/test, FPL rarely intercepts as being an INVALID # until after it is passed thru the rating tariff).
Does this clear it up any? Or are you still needing any more clarification? I can either give more detail, or less if you are still not satisfied with the answer.
Have a great holiday season!
