FonGo.com

Post by TheHardy »

Website not developed yet, but the caption says "Talk freely to the world" ... Freely as in FREE, or with a connection charge?

Sign of things to come?

A little digging shows FonGo as a subsidiary of Fibernetics ... so this could help things out on the FPL side ... or not ... time to wait and see I guess.

Well they only have a few days left to make good on their launch date.

Safe bet --- I think you and I are the first ones in on this -- that press release I quoted is all of 45 mins old ...

I _do_ wonder what implications this has for us as FPL-ers...

Fongo.ca has been registered by 295.ca, so I would say it has a good chance of complimenting the current system rather than fighting it. Maybe it will be a community type version of FPL to try and attract the younger crowd (like me :? ).

Undoubtedly it is a 'division' of Fibernetics -- and I think that they would be silly to compete against each other ... but I wonder if it is GOOD things in store for us, or status quo, or relegation to 2nd tier or what? As for younger, are you in that reverse-aging system there?? No matter which direction you are facing, you are heading towards diapers ... ;)

Should I rush out and buy some popcorn? ;) Launching Dec/11, as Jake points out, does not really leave a whole heck of a lot of time to meet the deadline ...

And as per my previous post in this thread, I hope that does not mean that FPL will be relegated to back-burner status --- G.O.K. that there are some much needed updates required at FPL (website makeover, outdated information, buggy softphone....)

This might the same news as you read http://news.techfinance.ca/fongo-sets-to-launch/
I think the key to all this is what LiveHive does http://www.therecord.com/news/business/ ... ibernetics

From reading all this I would suggest - Television, Interaction, Mobile devices, as well as phone/video calls.

4th paragraph -- love the overstatement ....

"Under the service, people get a phone line through their computers. It allows them to call anywhere in Canada for free, receive calls, get voice mail and set up a “follow me” feature that allows them to get their incoming calls transferred to other phones. ..."

Yeah, 'not-so-much' ... the overstatements were at least fixed on the FPL website long ago, but as this is an older news release (Oct/11) someone should have proofed it on the Fibernetics/FPL side to keep from getting slammed with FALSE ADVERTISING claims -- suggestion to anyone from FPL reading -- contact author, get this changed ... ;)

Open to speculation as to what will happen. I seem to think along the same lines, that our days may be numbered ... maybe a 'grandfather' clause --- who knows.

I do know, from MIKE posting in another thread, that the rollout of FonGo has been bumped ... so it will be 2012 before we see what the heck is up ...

I really can't see FPL destroying the basis of what they have been built on. Also, why do a massive change on the tariff, if in two weeks you are going to make them all cost the same?

I think all that is going to happen is they are going to get a new branding with some side steps into the world of TV, interaction, and a more social and mobile environment.
(I think I covered all my bases there :))

I'm of the opinion we will be better off, with more free things, and of course a few more paid services.

FonGo on the horizon

Post by TheHardy »

I hope you are right Jake ... I think that the tariff rework was part of them AUTOMATING the updates of new NPA-NXX's --- however, it has broken some pre-existing local calling links (specifically around Winnipeg & Halifax) but corrected some others that WERE free but should have been toll all along; the new FREE ones, I am not sure what the idea/plan is there, but they are very inconsistent (as per my other threads on them). I hope to hear back from Steve regarding what is up with those LCA's and so forth upon his return -- I think I have 4 separate PMs into him on that.

I think you are right that we will see some additional chargeable options pop up ... I am dreading a user fee or something along the lines of a yearly/monthly fee or something though applied to the base service. As I say, comparing to Ooma and the others that I am starting to see ads for, one can only speculate at this point.

The rebranding is what it is, and goes to serve their bigger overall picture. I suppose we shall see ... unless we can dredge some insider news out of someone with a GREEN name ... ;-)

That's how I read it first, but as I looked at it for more than 10 seconds, it emerged more and more as FonGo ... I suppose ... still interested to see what the "history" of that name will be, or the deeper meaning. At least there is no guessing around at ALL with "freephoneline" ... pretty well sums it up.

I guess we will see in January 2012 .... or maybe February .... or March .... April ...... June ......................................................... July ........................................

Failure to Launch

Post by TheHardy »

No, not the sappy chick-flick movie --- but as the time ticks down to close out 2011, it becomes obvious, even with Mike's unofficial official announcement that FonGo will not make it's "Launching in Dec 2011" deadline .... almost there for our Nfld friends ... ;-)

I was curious when someone would first post on the Fongo thing...

It seems like an exciting move... but really, stay tuned?

I've been watching for the official word on the announcements forum.

WHAT'S UP!?

I want in on the ground floor ;)

FonGo non launch

Post by TheHardy »

Well, we have officially missed the launch date (and year) ...

Ground floor? How about the unfinished dirt basement? ;-)

Official word? Hmmm, maybe an FPL forum writer ... FPL is slow to announce lots of things ... maybe the rebranding will help! I suppose all we can do is wait and see what shakes out!

I refer to our subscriber release when I say:

Not that it answers any more questions, but it certainly sheds some light on the 'huh?' factor!
