Installing Android App on a overseas phone

Post by kslay »

Hi, my brother is studying in India. He has a galaxy S2 and an Indian sim card (left his Roger's sim card here since he was going for a long time and not just a 2 week vacation). He can't install the app. It says that the app is not available in this region. He hasn't tried installing the Desktop app since in my opinion that would be useless we'd rather skype. Is there any way to make this work.

PS he would only be using it over wi-fi

This would likely be a restriction of the Android market, similar to the Apple store and trying to download things only available to US customers (due to Canadian copyrights etc..). With the India SIM his locale with Google would be set up as India and our app being restricted to Canada, would not work.

He can try changing his region to Canada to see if that would work, however I'm not sure if the market has safeguards against people doing this or even if it is changeable.

Would there be anything that Fongo would object to if I was to provide an APK to kslay to give to his brother?

Try logon to the Market from a PC in Canada with your brother's account to see if the app can be pushed to his phone.

Thanks for the replies Kris, Jake and Amowagou. I will tell him to change the region to Canada and see if that works.

I'm fairly new to the Android system. My previous phone was a Blackberry. I don't want you to get yourself into trouble Jake; so do not send me the file. But how about pointing me in the right direction? Am I looking for something that would unlock the region? Some clues perhaps so that I can find it myself.

Would I log into his account and download the file then email it to him? Little more help please as I mentioned I'm fairly new to Android.

Thanks.

PS he's 10.5 hours ahead of us, so it may take some time for me to report back.

:) I have found myself in a lot more trouble in the past than if I share an APK file ;) but it is up to you if you want it or not. Fongo_Kris told me in another thread to pass the APK file to someone else via PM so I don't think there will be any burning at the steak if I gave it to you, I was more asking if I could spread the file more openly.

Having said that, your brother could try a proxysite, something like hidemyass. This link may work for you http://1.hidemyass.com/ip-1/encoded/czo ... dm9pY2U%3D

Just use the advance option and pick a US server which should work.

I don't mind pointing you in the direction of the APK file that your brother could download and install manually.

Hi Everyone,

I'm in the same situation as the original poster. I've a Canadian and would like to use this app from UK (on wifi) but Android market is not letting me install this app.

Is it possible for someone to email me this app (APK file) at Maverick2k4@gmail.com

Thanks a lot!

There's no need for anyone to e-mail anything. See this thread: Using Dell Voice overseas

Also I've been able to download apps from Google Play that are country restricted (to Europe in my case) using this app: Market Unlocker - Android Apps on Google Play. (However it requires Root permission.)

Well Market unlocker requires rooted phone and I can't root my phone because its a company phone.

The thread you mentioned assumes that Fongo app is already installed on phone and it provides a way to backup.

Any other way I can install this app while I'm in UK?

Thanks,
