Use my Dell Voice number as my Home Phone number

Post by flo »

Hi,
I am a little bit confused. If I already have an ATA, can I simply purchase my Dell Voice SIP and configure my ATA so that I can use Dell Voice number on my home phones?
Thanks very much.

Yep, pretty much.
You might have to do a bit of fiddling to get the ATA to work, but I lot of the times it is that easy. Buy the config file (50$+tax) and enter the details in the ATA. There is nothing else you have to buy, unless you want to port in your number or buy a voucher for calling non free areas. But those are optional and not needed unless you want them.

as Jake stated, that's essentially it... dependent on what ATA you have! Generic ones are generally fine (by that I mean standard ones, not proprietary service based ones -- nothing to do with manufacturers!). Some may require a little more tweaking than others, but pretty well any NON-proprietary one will work! Some better than others ...

I don't use my DellVoice number for my home phone because FPL do not supply numbers in my area but I do use a number from another provider. I have a Grandstream 286 connected to my old PSTN system with two phones that do not require extrernal power to operate and a three handset cordless system all operating from the 286. I have a back up system (solar) to run my modem and phone in case of a power failure as well as a cell phone (for emergencies). For the most part, the service that I have works well and I have not missed the traditional phone and, in an entire year, had to call on the back up power for about two hours last fall during a storm. The best thing about voip and my local DID number is that I now get none of those phone calls at supper time that used to be so annoying ... the DID number is unlisted!
