FreePhoneLine + Google Voice

Post by robchiappetta »

I was wondering if I could use a google voice account to call to the US for free. I have a ATA with SIP file from FPL aka Fongo.

As anyone been able to set this up, and if so what are the steps

Thanks
Rob

You can't connect directly to GV, but you can if you set up a PBX that has support for GV. PBX in a Flash does I believe as well as the native Asterisk. I'm sure others are able to do it also.

If you have a SipSorcery account I have heard people have used that, also PBXES has an option to add in a GV account, but you have to have a paid account with them.

IFAIK, it's not going to be as easy as plugging in a few details and it will work, so a lot will depend on how much playing you want to do. If you are looking to make the odd free call to the US, look at NetTalk as an app for Android or the actual GV app.

GoogleVoice became avaialable during Asterisk 1.6 as an add-on, then became native in 1.8.

So using FreePBX for example you could setup two trunks (One with FPL and one with GV), then either using dialing rules, or a manual trunk selection (Such as dial 9 to get out) you could select from one account or the other depending on where you intend to call.

You could also setup FreeSWITCH and add both your FPL account and your Google Voice account. Using FreeSWITCH, you could set it up with GV and then set FreeSWITCH up with the second line on your ATA. Then you can use one phone.

For those not in the know;
FreeSWITCH is an alternative VoIP PBX project which started as a derivative work of Asterisk by one of it's developers who saw some of the core issues that were not being addressed.

Some people criticize it for it's XML use, others think it's brilliant.
But in the code, where things truly matter FreeSWITCH has proven itself to be more stable for large numbers of users. (1000+ registrations)

I don't have a lot of experience configuring FreeSWITCH so I cannot attest to the usability aspect, I do find FreePBX to be very user friendly though.

Perhaps neronut can provide us more information onf FreeSWITCH Installation, Configuration and Administration?
