DJC is correct -- while it has been suggested and talked about, currently the ONLY way to change your number after you have registered, is to create a new account. If you want to use the same email address, you will have to DELETE your existing account first.

If you have PURCHASED credits or an UNLOCK KEY, you will need to contact customer service FIRST before you do that, otherwise you will LOSE your purchase!
(and by contact, I mean CALL THEM directly, not email or on the forum!).

Sorry there is not a more elegant solution at this time!

The VoIP unlock keys are locked to an account. If you choose to delete the account and get a new number (when signing up again) you will still need to purchase a new key, even if speaking to one of our CSR's first. This is why we always suggest you make sure you are happy with your number before purchasing it. If you really don't like the number, you can choose (for a one time fee of $25) to port in your current phone number and it will replace the number while allowing you to keep the VoIP unlock key.

Moving vs just changing #

Mike --- reading your above, and taking it all into account, may I be so bold as to suggest that if a user moves (and actually PHYSICALLY changes their address in the account config) and therefore needs to request another number (perhaps local to their NEW 'home') that Fongo can look into providing such a service at a reduced cost? I am not meaning to take money out of the Fongo Penny-purse, just rather making a suggestion. Mobile providers, for example, DO charge a "change fee" if you are changing your number JUST for the sake of changing your number (UNLESS it is due to harassing calls, in which case you need the documentation). However, if you DO move, you ARE allowed a number change, the cost of which the *LEC usually eats (assuming you actually "MOVED").

Just my two cents. Vanity-#-changes -- yes, charge charge CHARGE! Moves ... we should examine this more... :)

I changed my number with Telus online. I was not charged for that, at least I don't think I was :?

I think if I moved to a different area, I would probably want to keep my number so friends around there can still call it and get hold of me with a local call. That's just me personally though. 50$ for a new config file isn't a huge amount to pay considering what the alternative would be with Bell/Rogers/Etc. If for some reason I didn't want to pay for the new config file, then I could always grab a new 'local' number and forward it to the old one. Less convenient, but cheaper.

As I say, these are just my views, I'm sure others have very valid points also as to why Fongo should discount the fee.

Vanity numbers is always something I thought that Fongo could make a bit more on. I'm sure there are lots of people who would pay for certain numbers. There are lots of good vanity numbers, especially if you know where to look

Mobility or landline? I believe that Mobility dropped their charge for changing numbers on OLDER accounts (maybe newer one too) so long as you did it online; this was to compete with Fido, who did it to compete with Wind/Mobilicity (aka the new guys)

True. And that is my point ... if you want to keep your login etc and not have to change too much, make it a chargeable service. Or if you want to select, rather than draw randomly, stick a $5-10 surcharge on there and let the end-user "pick" (or try to) their preferred #.

As for moves vs $50 being cheap, if you change your actual service address location (and not just FIDDLING ABOUT!), then I believe strongly that there should be some incentive (or free) method to change config file, IF you desire to select a number LOCAL to YOUR NEW LOCATION. I can see your point about retaining your old number for FORMER ppl to contact you, but if it is your PRIMARY #, then most people will by default choose a LOCAL number ...

Anyways, something for Fongo to kick around and examine. Then again MULTIPLE DID's are something they have discussed and even HINTED at, so THAT would go a long way to addressing this issue too, wouldn't it??????????????????????? :o

In my case, I had to pick a not-exactly local (weirdness of 514) number because Montréal's 438 could not be selected (already used, please pick another, looping on the same number). I will try using another email and see if today 438 is available.

Well, no more MTL numbers available. It makes quite a difference for potential local callers:

Nope, still no Montreal numbers, nor Toronto numbers still it seems. I'm really surprised that Fongo has not jumped on this more and got those two areas sorted out quicker.
I guess those wanting numbers in thoses areas will either just have to pick another area, or wait.

Actually they have some available on freephoneline.ca, just not through DellVoice.ca, so it must be by design.

New numbers pending

Post by TheHardy »

Fibernetics has applied for a whole slew of new exchanges in areas they already service (no expansion noted, sorry!), so the major metro areas should see some new numbers coming on line soon!
