Free Calling Cities

Post by Jos »

In the Canada’s top free calling cities, Saguenay QC is in the list. When I try to call 418-549-xxxx the system that it is not part of my dial plan. Is it normal?

418-549 is an exchange which belongs to Chicoutimi, QC. At this time Chicoutimi is not included within the free calling city list

I hope you do realize that Chicoutimi is actually called Saguenay (Saguenay city is the result of the merge between La Baie, Chicoutimi and Jonquiere and several other smaller towns) so your are basically saying it is on the liste of free city but isn't really free.

When searching the Local calling guide http://www.localcallingguide.com/lca_listexch.php Saguenay cannot be found. Instead the cities mentionned and that now make Saguenay (Jonquière, Chicoutimi, LaBaie and 4 other towns) can be found.

All of them are in the same locate rate exchange.

Fongo should either not announce Saguenay in their list of free cities or simply list what the old cities that now make Saguenay that are free to call (I cannot guess which ones). For example if LaBaie is free to call then instead of having Saguenay in the list it should be LaBaie. Thing is this will also be problematic for Fongo because all the old cities that now make Saguenay are free to call between them with other carriers.

If it were to be posted in that way, it would take a significant amount of time to set up as it would need to be done for a multiple citty areas (ex: Montreal being broken down into: St-Anne de Bellevue, Senneville, Kirkland, beaconsfield, Baie'D'urfe, Point-Claire, Dorval, Lachine, Pierrefonds, Ste-Genevieve, and that is just the west island.)

I was giving out the possibilities in order to correctly inform users and make Fongo more precise thus avoiding potential arguments. Maybe the solution would be to make some exceptions in the free calling list like when not too many to list put cities that are really free to call in such areas (instead of writing Sagunay just write which of the 7 cities that makes it) or maybe put an asterisk before a city like Saguenay with an explanation at the bottom of the free cities list (it could be something like, "Due to some restrictions not all districts of the new city are in the free calling area of Fongo although they are in the same local rate exchange").

callopsitte_himself, that is (IMO) a valuable suggestion, which I will be asking our dev team to look into.

I've tried many of them and none works.

Chicoutimi (545, 543, 549, 696, 817, 815, 817, 540, 581)
Jonquiere (542, 547, 548, 699)
La Baie (544, 306)
Laterriere (678)
Canton-Tremblay (543)
Lac-Kenogami (344, 542, 547)
Shipshaw (547)

Can we at least know which one in "Saguenay" actually works ? (If there is any) :?

BUMP to bring this one back to the forefront.

I did some digging before the massive tariff update and can verify that UNOFFICIALLY (before the update) that La Baie, Chicoutimi and Jonquiere _DID_ all have free calling on the FPL network. They were reverted to TOLL status as of the tariff update.

Consoleo is correct in stating that there is actually no SAGUENAY ratecentre anywhere in Canada. And a check of Wikipedia (or any geographical utility) verifies that Saguenay is a region .... not one specific city ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saguenay,_Quebec

Quote:
---
"Municipal merger

The city was formed on February 18, 2002 by amalgamating the cities of Chicoutimi, Jonquière, La Baie and Laterrière, along with the municipalities of Lac-Kénogami and Shipshaw and part of the township of Tremblay.

The city is divided into three boroughs:

Chicoutimi (territories of Chicoutimi, Laterrière and Tremblay township);
Jonquière (territories of Jonquière, Lac-Kénogami, and Shipshaw);
La Baie (territory of La Baie)."
---

I would politely request that FPL/DV/Fongo look further into this matter, as the new websites clearly state that Saguenay has free calling coverage.

Did you read well from wikipedia ?
Saguenay (pronounced /ˈsæɡəˌneɪ/, French: Saguenay [saɡnɛ]) is a city in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region
It's the same as Quebec city in the region of Quebec. So YES it is a officially a city since 2002 ;)

Now let Fongo tell us which exchange are working ? If they are any ?! :?

Saguenay

Post by TheHardy »

I suppose I mis-phrased what I meant -- it is more "like" a REGONAL municipality than a city itself, as it is composed of more than one (former) city. I could have been more clear about what I meant.

Furthermore, like many larger centres, it has more than one ratecentre within it, and therefore poses a bit of "difficulty" for Fongo.

I note that there has been no further official word from anyone at Fongo ... which is disappointing to say the least. I would think that their "looking into it" would have had some results by now, as it is not overly difficult to verify the information that we have provided here versus what they claim on their website.

And I have to restate again, that prior to the tariff-fix JUST before the Fongo changeover, calls to Chicoutimi and Jonquiere were indeed free (calls to the other "cities" of Saguenay may well have been, but I cannot recall checking them out).

Again, I apologize for my mis-characterization of what I posted -- I know what I meant to say, but did not manage to get it across as I had intended.

I know it has been awhile since this topic was last posted, just thought i would give an update.

the free calling city has been broken down for this area and now each city that makes up the area is listed instead of the entire region.

Is that the page you mean, Mike?

That's been up a while ... it is still missing some ratecentres that are actually FREE ... (within BC, eg, Nanaimo and Comox are not listed, but are indeed free).

Hi Everyone,

Another area that does not work in terrif plan is "Seaforth Independant" for Ontario. I notice it is still on the local calling list but will not work.

Just curious if anyone knows about this area?

Thank-You,
Neil

Specific NPA-NXX that is not working, or???

Lessee ... this is what I find ...

a) Seaforth Independant IS listed as a free call on Fongo and DV sites ...

b) Seaforth Ind. is only 519-522 and the ILEC is TUCKERSMITH COMM CO-OP

c) ratecheck tool shows this as a free call ($0.00) ....

so I see no problem there, unless it is a specific call issue??
