Inconsistent incoming calls

Post by cottage »

Very often incoming calls are failing and very inconsistent – one calls comes OK, and hour later – fails. In two years using FPL I had no such problem and no configurations were changed. This problem started a half year ago.
I am using SPA2102 with Acanac DSL at home, and HT502 with Bell DSL at cottage.
Only one ATA powered at any time. The same problem at both locations.
The same problem start getting lately my brother using FPL with SPA2102 and Roger cable.
Many Thanks in advance

This is starting to look like a common issue. It is router related, and not the fault of Fongo. You need a clearly defined incoming path from Fongo to the ATA, and the router is no longer doing it's job.

I would manually forward the proper RTP ports and SIP ports from the router to the ATA instead of hoping the router can do it, because the router does not do it reliably. You might want to set the registration period on the ATA devices to something like 120 seconds to remind the router your ATA still needs those ports. You should not have to do that, but this is what you have to deal with with crappy router firmware.

You can do one of 2 things on your DIR-615 depending on the version.

1-Port-trigger your DIR-615 using the SIP and RTP ports that your ATA uses. Ex. if your ATA uses SIP port 5060-5061 and RTP 16000-17000, then enter "5060-5061" in the trigger port and "5060-5061,16000-17000" in the triggered ports box without the quotes. Contrary to what you may have read about SIP ALG (which are correct in most cases), you MUST ENABLE SIP ALG on your DIR-615! Needless to say, you do not need port forwarding.

2-Flash it with DD-WRT and you do not need to port forward nor port trigger. It will just work like a charm with VOIP.

If your DSL modem has an integrated router, you MUST set it to bridge mode, or even better just "kill" the router function of the DSL modem then make DIR-615 your DHCP router. Otherwise, the above suggestions may NOT work.

Google is your friend! :)

It seems that changing SIP port to 5062 had fixed problem on Bell modem / HT502 ATA combination
Thanks for help and advise!

Yes, in my experience, unless you are using only one voip service on one device then don't forward 5060 from the router to a specific device but use 5061 up or any other available port not used for anything else and use a static IP for each device. Port 5060 will still be used for the call(s) externally but the ATA will look after the technicalities of that.
