Default devices?

Post by Irix »

Any way to choose default input and output devices on the Dell Voice desktop app? It doesn't seem to pay attention to Windows' default selections and I can't find where I can change that.

Sadly not at this time. The Java Language that Fongo uses to program the soft phone makes it difficult to select audio devices.

The programming that has gone into FPL and DV softphones does leave a whole lot to be desired in GENERAL ...

Well will this ever be implemented? At the least have it use Windows' default devices? :S

I agree that THIS would be a good baseline to shoot to, because we all know how to (or can without too much trouble) configure the DEFAULT WIndows devices... so that WOULD be helpful, if the softphones are re-coded and re-released!

If you find the right threads, you would know that FPL and DV softphones use the default audio I/O of the Windows machine.

Nevertheless, if as you claim it doesn't seem to pay attention to Windows' default selections, your Java version/update might be the culprit. There are threads about the Java/FPL softphone problem.

When you manage to get a working installation and you know your way around Windows, then keep reading.

I have a working installation of DV softphone and I can set the default playback to built-in speakers paired with Bluetooth as default recording device. When a call comes in, the ring would come from the netbook's speakers that can be heard within a reasonable distance inside the house. After accepting the call, I can advise the caller to hold his line through my BT (which had been set as default recording device) while I set the BT as default playback device. Now, I have the BT as default playback as well as default recording device. I can then roam around handsfree within BT range talking on the phone. (I remind myself to set back default playback device to speakers after the call is complete to be ready for the next incoming call).

A simpler set up would be using a headset. If you go this route, you would set default I/O to mic and speaker, respectively. When you hear the incoming ring, accept the call then plug in your headset. Unlike the BT set up, you (I mean the headset) have to stay tethered to your computer
