Dialpad - not working

Post by cpchun »

Hi,

I just downloaded Dell Voice on my new Dell Vostro V131. The dial pad does not work (i.e. numbers do not punch out when I click on the digits). I am using Windows 7, and have the latest Java vs 7.0.10

Please advise.

Hi cpchun,

Are you sure you are connected to the Fongo servers? If you are not connected, the dial pad will not be enabled.

A valid question from Mike --- make sure that your # is popped up in the TOP box above the dialpad -- if it is NOT, you are NOT connected to the Fongo servers! (and they seem to have been having a small problem lately...)

I have the same problem. The dial pad refuses to respond, and I can see my phone number at the top. I called myself via Skype, and Dell Voice detected the call, but it won't let me call out.

Very odd that, is it the active application? Do you get any input whatsoever? You should be able to enter a number, either via your keyboard or via the keypad unless the app is completely frozen/malfunctioning. You can try to uninstall (completely) and then re-installing the app and seeing if that helps any!

Hey Everyone,
We have been looking into this and testing on it. We have been able to duplicate this issue. Dell Voice is currently looking into this to see about writting a patch for it.In the mean time, we do have a run around for it, so that you can get your dial pad working again. This issue appears to be on 32bit systems (running 32 bit Java) that have the latest Java updates. If you follow this link, and go back to version 29, the dial pad should start working for you again.

And go back to version 29, the dial pad should start working for you again.

While it is nice to hear that the DV team is working on their thing, is there ANY news whatsoever on getting an update for the FPL softphone, which has been plagued with KNOWN bugs for a LONG time? Or has support for the FPL softphone ceased now with DV being the flagship software??

I installed the update v29 from Oracle as suggested. My machine is 64 bit so I had to install the x64bit version. This has had no effect whatsoever. It still does not work.

You will still need the 64 bit Java installed as well. All testing on our end has shown this should work.

Can you provide link for those of us using 32bit. the link you've provided is for bit 64 and I get error message when I try to install. today a tech support told me to download java version 1.6.0_20. Still haven't succeeded with dial pad. Please provide link for the 32 bit, so I can attempt again. Spent the whole day today trying to figure things out. thx

Oddly enough, it is only NUMBERS that will not enter into the dialing window -- symbols and all sorts of other stuff are able to be entered, just not NUMBERS ... I would imagine that the beta-testers and trouble shooters would have already found this out, but I felt it was worth posting.

Downgrading is the solution?

Post by TheHardy »

While it _does_ resolve the problem, I find it somewhat unsettling that the official solution from Fongo is not to correct their software to work with the latest versions of a WIDELY available program, but rather to encourage users to DOWNGRADE their software version ...

How long until a PROPER fix, not a stop-gap? At some point OTHER applications will require a NEW java version, which will then cause the Fongo software to stop functioning again, if it has not been upgraded.

Just look at how long the CID problem in FPL 3.0.3.0 has been allowed to FESTER unresolved. Software support is definitely an Achilles heel for Fongo!!

The answer was posted earlier on in the thread. Odds are you updated your Java.

Mike: Just to be perfectly 'crystal' clear, the problem lies with the SOFTPHONE (and it's coding), NOT with JAVA itself. The softphone's coding and implementation of the JAVA code is what is at fault, and the long-term solution is to bug-fix (re-code) the softphone.

The "solution" of downgrading is problematic for several reasons, mainly that it simply puts a bandaid on an amputation -- it does not fix the underlying issue of the poor coding in the softphone itself.

A lot of people, myself included, have the PRIME components of our system (Windows, Java, Firefox etc) set to AUTOMATICALLY update whenever there is a newer version out there ... so for a lot of people, the "fix" is like closing the door to the barn after the horse has bolted.

Your "official" answer therefore should also include "And turn off auto-updates of your Java subsystem to prevent re-occurrence..." as someone with auto-update will downgrade and then find they have the same problem again a week (or whatever their settings are) later!!!

Not only that, but SOME (and properly coded) programs rely on the newer versions of Java and their increased functionality -- so longterm, the "FIX" of running a downgraded or older version of JAVA becomes no longer viable.

Please just get the software vendor/subcontractor to FIX the issue inside of the coding of the softphone!!!

I Installed version 29 as stated and followed all instructions. When I look in my program list, I see it is installed but the latest version is also there and when I chech what version I am running, it is still version 33.
I removed the newest version but I get a message JDK not found.
Can you tell me how to do it properly?

Uninstall both versions of Java then go back to the link and install the correct one. Reboot and it should work fine. If not, reinstall DV after Java has been uninstalled then reinstalled.

This is something they are looking at. The issue at hand isnt a simple one as these are options that were working with the previous versions of Java. This is the official response, yes, but it is until we have a fix for the coding itself.

Uninstalling

Be aware that particularly with FPL software (and I would think DV as well), that uninstalling it is sometimes problematic.

One solution that was suggested via the forums and worked very well, was to use a 3rd party uninstaller "REVO UNINSTALLER" for removal of FPL (DV) software.

Note that it was also recommended to try the regular uninstall first, then reinstall and if it STILL failed to go with REVO to uninstall again --- I would suggest that you just SKIP the first step and go directly to the REVO uninstall in the first place to save yourself some time and headache.
