I want to be notified by email when someone leaves voicemail

Post by dillpickle »

Hello,
I have a Dell Voice phone number.

I do not have any "Follow Me" phone numbers associated with my Dell Voice number. So, if someone calls my Dell Voice number and reaches the voicemail, it is the Dell Voice voicemail they have reached.

I would like to be notified by email when someone leaves me a voicemail in my Dell Voice number. How can I set up my system for email notifications?

Unfortunately that functionality is not available on the DV softphone. If you install the FPL softphone, all you need is to change your voicemail settings to either Forward or Copy in your Online account settings.

cu2o2o2,
1. Can a Dell Voice user make use of the FPL sotftphone?
2. If I install the FPL softphone, can I be notified via email when I have new voicemail?

1) No -- DV and FPL are separate (yet similar) services offered by Fongo. You would need to create a NEW FPL account with a NEW number. www.freephoneline.ca

2) If you set up an FPL account (no need to install the software to do so!), you can then use the online user settings (login to your FPL account on the web) and set your voicemail settings to COPY TO EMAIL -- you will not only be notified of a new voicemail by email, but it will also be attached as a WAV file (ie: play from email, no need to log into voicemail).

Why this functionality is not included in DV is a question you would need to ask of Fongo staff.

If you are not too attached to your DV number, just ditch it and set up a FPL # then you will have your forwarding to email option.

The only downside is you won't be able to use a FPL account on the new DV mobile apps - but then you have your existing DV account if you still want to use that.

If you really love your DV number and don't want to loose it, there are 3 things I can think of for you to do.
1. Hang in there until the add the feature (if they ever do)
2. Port your DV number over to FPL. This will cost you $25 to do so.
3. Forward your calls from your DV # to a new FPL number. Set the forward time to less than your voicemail rings on your DV so calls will get forwarded to your FPL number - and then onto your FPL voicemail where you will get the email function.

Personally I think I would just ditch the DV account and set up a new FPL account that has the voicemail email option.

Just to add...

... to Jake's and my previous responses ....

Fongo has stated when asked, that DV will not necessarily mirror features in FPL as they are two separate and distinct services, however that they would take under advisement the request to add fwd-to-email option for voicemail to DV "at a future time". That is about as vague as you can get, while still making a response.

So as Jake said -- if you want it NOW, go FPL ... if you can wait, well, it is up to you!! Unless you know the Pressure Point or Vulcan Deathgrip to apply to Fongo to get a speedy feature addition to DV! ;-)

I've set up a FPL number, but can't set up "Copy to Email"

Post by dillpickle »

TheHardy, cu2o2o2, Jake, thanks for all your helpful comments.

I am not at all attached to my Dell Voice number. I have created a FreePhoneLine phone number. After logging into my account on the freephoneline.ca, I go to https://www.freephoneline.ca/voicemailSettings. Please look at the attached screenshot. It appears that I can't change any voicemail settings. What's wrong and how can I make things right?

Dear all,
I reloaded the webpage (https://www.freephoneline.ca/voicemailSettings) and now I see Voicemail to Email. I'll change the setting from None to "Copy", as several of you have advised.

Question: What's the difference between "Copy" and "Forward"?

Thanks again!

Very happy with FPL voicemail-to-email feature!!!

Post by dillpickle »

Dear All,
I've just called my FPL number and sent myself a voicemail. Seconds later, I see the email with the Wav file in my inbox. I'm so happy. I could only be happier if I could get the message transcribed as I do with my Google Voice number!

Copy means the message will emailed to you and will be left in your voicemail box, so you will have to clear it either online or by calling into your voicemail ( *98 )

Forward sends it to your email, then deletes it.

Question: _______________

Thanks again!
Glad that things worked out for you in the end. Happy we were able to help also! I don't mind helping.

I will, however, say this. And please take it at face-value, just as it is written -- no subtext, no hidden meaning and most assuredly NOT a slam or complaint.

You can save yourself a lot of time if you read the manual or FAQ. Have patience too!

You yourself found some things and posted right afterwards, whereas if you had tinkered a bit, you would have found it before posting too!

Now then, back to "we don't mind helping" but you can help yourself too, and a lot faster than waiting for our replies!

Again -- not a slam, dig, flame or anything more than an OBSERVATION! :-)

Glad it is running as you want. Enjoy!

As for not having every feature you want, feel free to make a suggestion of what you would like to see added - never hurts. I would not hold my breath for what you are after tho, at they are not competing head on with that product ...
