FPL and Google Voice

Post by robchiappetta »

I see when I make calls from google voice, I can call to the US for free from Canada

Is there any way to tie my google voice account with my FPL account, maybe even on my ATA so I can call to the US from my phone like normal.

I remember in the past this was something difficult to setup, but now that google voice allows you to call the US for free, I am hoping its something easier to set up now

Does anyone know if this can be done?
Thanks
Rob

I use a PBX to do this, but I have read it is possible with an OBI ATA. I have no experience with this but this might lead you in the right direction http://www.obitalk.com/forum/index.php?topic=62.0

As far as I know Google Voice isn't the same type of VOIP technology as FPL (or other VOIP services I guess) so some 'adjusting' is needed to get it working.

I don't it will be possible with a PAP2T though.

Google Voice basically calls the phone numbers you have it setup to notify. You cannot have it terminate at an ATA directly but you can have it call a number which is hosted and connected to your ATA.

The OBI setup uses the Google Talk plugin from Gmail where OBI is hosting the setup and the OBI hardware is an ATA itself.

There are numerous setup explanations on how to use Google Voice which is different than Google Talk.

FPL is a VOIP system much like many others but entirely different than Google Voice.

Hope this helps, but this is a very basic explanation.

well I got google voice work on my Linksys PAP2T. However, it just receives call this time only. To make a call out you have to go on computer dial the number that you want to call then it will ring your phone. Pick up then it will connect to the number u want to call.

However if you have Android smart phone or apple iphone then you get make call and receive call no problem without go on the computer

I use Google voice for long distance to US and Canada where is FPL is not free. Of course I set up FPL with it too . I think I have a tutorial on this form about google voice and FPL setup on iPhone some where

I am good to go.

Would you be able to provide some instructions to get it setup on the ATA. I am fine with having to use my computer to make an outgoing call, as I really don't call long distance too often

Thank You
