Abroad...

When I am abroad, if family call me on my Dell phone number:
a) will they reach me?
b) if I am not on wifi, will my world credit be use?
c) if I have my mobile set to refuse any incoming data except through wifi, I will be notified of the missed call
d) do I need a "follow me" number (an additional one?) for them to reach me?
e) on reading on the web site, I'm not sure that I won't have roaming charges from either my service provider here and/or abroad even on wifi. Or on wifi there is absolutely no fee possible, it's totaly free.
f) I bought some credits and realized later that these credits are different from "world credits". Can they be transfered?

Forgive me for all these rookies questions...

a) they SHOULD, depending on signal strength, internet connection etc.
b) no bearing -- to the fongo app, internet is internet, whether WIFI or your carrier data
c) Not sure, good question
d) Nope, your phone number should work as usual
e) depends on the carrier and your phone settings. I have heard cases of people that have shut off data when abroad and STILL been nailed with high data roaming charges, because something over-rode those settings. FONGO has nothing to do with carrier roaming charges, look at your contract, what is included, and do research on your own carrier. Call their 611 and ask specifically about taking your model phone overseas to the country you are going, find out what to do to avoid roaming charges (don't let them tell you "turn it off or don't bring it)
f) wait for a Fongo rep to reply, sorry ...

does this help? The onus really is on YOU to find out from your carrier about any roaming charges ....

a) +1 to Hardy
b) View the fongo app (and all VoIP communications for that matter) more in the way you view instant messaging (Like MSN) but with voice.
c) Theoretically, if you're on the WiFi when the call comes in, yes you will know about it. If you're not on the WiFi you have no connection to the server to know about the call until your MWI picks it up. (You can test this one at home by turning off "3G/4G Data" in your phone's settings)
d) People can ALWAYS call your DellVoice number as though it were local to it's Area Code and Exchange (NPA-NXX) even when you're behind the great firewall of China.
e) Unfortunately fongo/DV cannot help you avoid roaming charges while abroad. Your best option is, before your trip, to call your cell provider and ask for technical support. Tell Technical support that you are traveling out of country and would like them to walk you through turning off Data AND Data Roaming so you do not accidentally rack up any charges. This way it will be in your account notes that their technicians walked you through this process, so it must have been done correctly.
f) Remember world-credits are only important if you plan to call international numbers. If your only intent is to use DV to call home or to receive calls while you're abroad then world credits do not apply. If however you'd like to order a pizza from Germany, then calling a German number will require global credit, even when you're standing in the pizza shop you're ordering from.

I asked my brother to contact me, he's in another area code, to check if a call to my number worked. He tried dialing the number and it didn't work. Then he tried adding my area code, still didn't work. Finaly he just added 1 to my Dell number and bingo.

Does that apply to France or elsewhere, in the sense that people calling me just add 1 followed with my Dell number, or do you then add the country's code like 33 for France.

For the roaming charges, it is a touchy problem. I recently bought the Galaxy S 3 from Samsung and I did uncheck the "authorize access to data on the mobile" and the "connect to roaming service". Please note that my mobile is in French so this might not be the exact translation. So this should, I was told, to stop data and conncetion unless I click them, or use wifi. At least I hope so!

Does anyone know if eventually video will be added to Dell?

I did a test with my brother to call me on my Dell number, and he didn't reach me directly. So we tried with the area code, same thing. FInaly he got me by adding 1 before my Dell number.

I'm just wondering if I am in France for example, will he have to dial 33 (France's code) before my number?

Your Dell Voice number behaves JUST like any other Canadian telephone number (mainly because it IS a Canadian telephone number). Depending on what carrier/provider your brother is with, he may or may not (in this case MAY!) have to dial the call as 11D. It depends on whether he is (from his current location, as mobile phones have a local calling "bubble" in North America) as compared to where your DV# is based .... Example: your brother has a VANCOUVER-based mobile #, you have a CALGARY-based DV number. If your brother calls you from any physical location other than NEAR Calgary from his VANCOUVER-based mobile#, he will most likely need to dial 11D to reach you (or as with TelusMobility, be played the message that it is a long distance call, and please wait while the call is completed). If however he is in CALGARY (even with his VANCOUVER #) he can call with 10D then.

People who are calling you will never need to dial an area or country code other than CANADA ... so for an international call FROM somewhere in Europe to YOUR DV#, it would be whatever the international access code is, and then the leading "1" for the COUNTRY of Canada (shares with US and other North American countries) ... so I think 00-1-npa-nxx-yyyy.

(Note that international from North America is 011-1-npa-nxx-yyyy, but you cannot dial it that way, as it errors out.....)

DOUBLE CHECK with your service provider before you go abroad. CALL and _SPECIFICALLY_ ask some live person how to do it for you PHONE on your ACCOUNT. Be very careful with roaming data VERY CAREFUL. You have been warned!!!! Do so completely at your own risk and peril. I guarantee you, that if you have ROAMING data while internationally abroad and you are not on an international roaming plan, you WILL have a heartattack when you get your bill (remember that foreign charges can take up to _3_ billing cycles to be processed!!!!)
