Ported phone but still ( For Now ) has bell dsl internet

Post by trini4ever »

My number was ported to Fongo on Friday but I still have Bell as my internet provider. The internet is still working but do I need a dry loop from Bell for my linksys ata to generate a dial tone?

If your DSL is working then, once configured your ATA should give a dial tone when connected to a SIP provider. I guess Velcom is providing DSL over the Bell line. Anyway, you should be able to go ahead and set up the ATA. If you have not yet purchsed the Fongo unlock key and you want a voip account to test you can get one free from getonsip.com.

dibsmft,

I am using a wired router with Bell's speed touch modem but I can't get a dial tone. The ATA in question, an SPA 2002, was configured on another computer and worked with a wireless router.

Are you trying to connect to FPL and it did connect OK previously but how was it configured on another computer and worked with a wireless router?
Does the ATA get an IP address from the router OK?
Do the lights show the ATA to be connected?
What model of Trendnet router do you have?

Hi dibsmft,

I am sorry for the confusion. My personal setup with Linksys PAP2T-NA and Velcom as provider is working ok. I am helping my cousin make the shift from Bell to Fongo as his bill was just too ridiculous for words. I had an old ATA lying about but in good working condition, which I configured at my home with the sip settings he bought from Fongo. The ATA worked fine at my home but when installed at his place there is no dial tone.

All he had was a speedtouch dsl modem, so I gave him a D-link wired router to use to split the internet connection. I have the modem connected to the wired router and out from the router to a PC and the ATA . The internet is working fine on the PC but there is no dial tone when I hook up the wireless phone to phone (1) of the ATA. The lights on the ATA are on also. I am thinking that maybe the computer, modem and router should be rebooted for it to work but I am not at his place right now. I don't know if there is something special that I have to do with the D-Link router.

Have you tried connecting the ATA directly to the DSL modem .... I assume that the device has a to ethernet output. The problem that you are having may be caused by the D-Link router. What models are the router and the modem? Does the router offer SIP ALG?

It's the DI-604 router and I didn't do a setup for it. I thought it was plug and play but it seems that there is a setup before use.http://support.dlink.com/emulators/di60 ... izard.html I guess I should have done the setup before looking for help on the forum.

As far as I can tell the router has SIP ALG .... make sure that you disable SIP ALG as it seems voip will probably not work if it is running.

dibsmft,

Problem solved! All it took was a simple reboot of the modem, router and ata. I don't know why I didn't think about this possible solution before but it was the first thing I tried and voila a dial tone. Thank you for your time and assistance.

Yes, rebooting is something I have come to assume that users will do. One thing, while your system is working now, it may not be permanent and you might find that the problems appear again as time passes. Rebooting is not always a substitute for the correct configuration of the devices concerned.

About your DSL internet and your ATA.

Your ATA will provide a dial-tone as long as it *believes* it has a functioning server connection. (Regardless of how it gets that internet connection)

Your DSL Internet: requires a connection to the C/O (Central Office) which is actually a range/signal boosting device somewhere in your relatively near vicinity owned by the phone company. (within a few KM) A dry-loop refers to any line that has an active connection to the C/O by NOT an active dial-tone. This is because dial-tone is only necessary for standard analog phones plugged into Bell's equipment.

After a line is discontinued it often takes time (5days to 5months) before Bell gets around to disabling the line. IF YOU HAVE NOT INFORMED YOUR INTERNET PROVIDER you will one day simply cease to have an internet connection. If your DSL provider is Bell, expect 24-48 hours activation period, if you are with a third party DSL provider, expect 72-128hr activation period, for a dry-loop to be turned on. During which time you will be without your internet, and as a result of having no internet, you will have no VoIP phone.

As such I cannot stress enough how important it is that you call your ISP, and speak to someone in tech support, not in sales. Explain to them that you ported your phone number out, but have not ordered a dry-loop, and you're worried about losing your connection.

When I flipped my Uncle recently I spoke to his providers tech support. (Advantage: I used to work for his provider, they have THREE people on tech support, that's the whole staff. then two bench techs to do repairs, which I hear may be reduced to one now, and 1 sr. 1jr. network admin. The rest of the staff are sales and/or management, about an equal number of them.) We ensured continuity of service as we switched away from Bell and onto Freephoneline, but mostly it comes down to best-guess and timing, mixed with a little luck.

As you still have Internet, you obviously got the luck part. Take care of the rest before it's a problem.
