How-to guide for using fongo as mobile plan replacement?

Post by nauru »

Is there a simple how-to guide somewhere for using fongo as a near-total replacement for cellular service, over wifi?

99% of the time I have access to reliable wifi, and would like to use that instead of cellular networks to make calls.

Currently I am signed up with fongo and use them as a total replacement for my home telephone. Have paid for ATA/PAP2T, and ported 416 number. Everything working excellent on my home phone.

So the options I'm considering are:

1. Have my home phone number forward to a second voip account which is linked to an app (which one?) on my android or ios phone. So it rings 3 times on my home phone, if no pickup then my mobile phone rings 3 times, if no pickup then it goes to voicemail. That way there is only one phone number to give out.

2. Use my current fongo account through a mobile phone app (which one?) so that when a call comes in, my home phone and mobile phone ring at the same time. Basically it's like having multiple phones on the same line. This option would be preferable but not sure if it is possible.

3. Open to other ideas.

Also what is the minimum OS version for ios and android in order to do each of the above? I am not one of those people who buys the latest phone; I buy only what's required to perform the specific functions that I value, nothing more. Currently I still have an iphone 3.1.3. I bought it by accident thinking if could do the basic but important stuff like receive calls over voip, and drag & drop files between the phone and a linux computer. I may be willing to get a slightly less old phone if it will allow me to use fongo instead of 3g while I'm away from home. But any upgrade will be to android, will not buy another apple phone.

Also open to Dell Voice options but would rather use as few accounts as possible to keep my life simple...

Thanks

As far as Android is concerned you also have the option of downloading a free SIP Phone (C-Sip Simple I suggest personally) and using the same SIP Unlock credentials you already own for your home phone. (This is only viable if you're the only user, and don't rely on the ATA being active for users at home when you go out.)

Check out companies that might be willing to sell you an unlocked used phone, there are some reputable ones around depending upon where you are located.

If you're willing to run either an Asterisk or a 3CX server your options amplify even further where your home and cell phones may belong to your own phone server, and that server relies on FPL as it's way to call the world. (From the FPL software side, this is essentially the same as terminating to an ATA, only you are allowed considerably more finite control with how it terminates.)

If you're on Android and want to have a dedicated SIP number for your cell, you're pretty much forced into DellVoice. I haven't checked the product requirements, but I suspect it'll run on just about anything as I know my SIP softphone app of choice runs even on Donut. (Android 1.6)

There are some threads out there on people's ideas and testing on how to dump the big phone providers, run some searches. Many of them reference Nokia phones.
