Apartment Intercom and FPL?

Post by Don Corleone »

Hi,

I'm wondering if I setup FPL at home if my apartment's intercom system will still work? What about if I use a separate phone for the intercom would it still work without a standard telephone line?

thx

Ok, what Ive gathered is that even after I cancel my phone line, if I keep a telephone connected to my phone jack it will ring when someone pages me downstairs. As long as I have the type of intercom system that is connected physically vs one that calls my phone number. Anyone care to confirm?

Completely depends on how your apartment enterphone/intercom is wired.

I am assuming that you are not using a dedicated enterphone/intercom handset ....

If it is a direct wired setup (NDSL), common in newer buildings, then the enterphone/intercom panel is hardwired directly to each suite, and will work even without provision of phone service from ANY provider (this is the case in my 7 year old building).

Other systems are set up to dial (either quietly or so that the person entering the # can hear it) a 10D number, which may or not be in that suite (this is a security hole, as it allows people NOT in the suite to "buzz" people in when they are not around...).

In any case, you will need to contact someone from your apartment to find out what kind of setup your enterphone/intercom has before we can assist you in answering your question fully.

To be brief, an FPL set up should work either way. You should, however, if it is a NDSL set up (first example) use a standard corded (not cordless) plugged directly into a wall outlet for use with your enterphone.
