hit and miss with freephoneline number

Post by epsilon3 »

Hi guys,

I bought a unlock key for a Voip number from freephoneline and I got all the details last month. I did few basic tests and it worked.

I cancelled other voip service provider today and I try to use the the freephoneline number.

I use a Talkswitch PBX which work without any issues with another 2 voip lines, one from Babytel, one from voip.ms BUT with the freephoneline I have many, many issues:

Outgoing calls
1. calling out is a hit and miss ... 70% of the calls I try to place are getting dead air or I hear a "metal crack" sound and then dead air.
2. when I manage to reach a number and I get a voice mail OR an IVR message ... I can hear nothing ...not the IVR message, nor the recorded message from the voice mail

Incoming calls
3. I put the freephoneline number to end into an IVR. If you call the number, the IVR rings but then OR the calls ends ...OR if the IVR kicks in prompting for the caller to pres 1 or 2 ...even if they press ...nothing happens (like the Voip # do not "read" the DMTF tones)

I called the support line but I am told to use the online support and then it hungs up.

I totally understand that once you pay $50 for the key and then the service is free you should not expect too much ... but neither that less :(

Any idea what it can be? My number is an 438-388-xxxx

Thanks,

They have always had a hard stand against supporting hardware that they didn't supply. Just hanging up is probably a little rude, but you would not have got any joy from them anyway.

Have you tried some simple testing without your PBX? I am thinking that your PBX might be the route of your problems.

If you have not already, download the desktop softphone and try calls in and out from there and see if they are OK, or if you get the same problems. If you still get the same problems you can now call back into a CSR and tell them you are getting the problems when using the softphone; don't mention you also use a PBX.

If that works fine, I assume you have some sort of ATA or IP Phone, load your config details straight into that so it is not going through your PBX, then try calls in and out and see what you get.

If that works, then it is looking like the problem lies in your PBX settings. I have not used TalkSwitch before, so I can't really help you there. Doing a quick Google it looks like a business solution, I only use the freeware stuff :)

Try the calls with the softphone and ATA and see what you get.

I will try this evening what you say ...

My PBX works without any other issues with 2 other voip providers ...I played a bit with few SIP settings (there are not too many as it is simple) with no avail...
(I tried with both NAT keep alive and not e.g.)

What is seems to me is that once the phone is in any way reaching an IVR (for outgoing or incoming calls) or a voicemail it cannot recognize that signal as an answer ...

I call my cell from this VoIP number ... I heard nothing on the voip ...the cell rung ... I did not answer and let it go to the voice mail ... all this time I had dead air on the Voip #. With this scenario, on the cell voice mail ... sometimes I got a recorded message (hearing myself talking on the voip number), sometimes not ...

If you are able to, download the softphone for the PC you are on/near and try those calls around the same time that you are getting the failures you state (just to eliminate a sporadic system error as a cause...) -- of course this means unregistering the ata, dunno if you are able to do that from where you are.

If the same failed calls do not present on the softphone (buggy as that is in it's OWN right), then you have tracked down part of the issue to your hardware setup ... if it persists, then it is with the network and how it is handing things.

Which are the providers of your lines that you are having the call issues with? Is it the same for all of the calls, even from other providers, or does it seem to be provider specific? I am not sure that this would play a role in this problem, but you never know ... stranger things have occurred!! :-)

I will do that (install the softphone) and try placing calls from it and then from the Talkswitch to see if it is a hardware issue, thanks.

I tried calling from the freephoneline few numbers: local, long distance or toll free number for customer service at freephoneline (so they can see it on their files), other toll free numbers, cell phones and local PSTN numbers, all with the same hit and miss result.... For outgoing calls: Dear air, some "crack" sound at the beginning and then dead air, for incoming calls the call reaches the IVR recording (sometimes) and then even if the caller press 1 -2 ...any option ...it does nothing

Same type of calls work ok on the Talkswitch with Babytel and voip.ms voip providers

I will do the same testings again this evening from the softphone.

Issue solved: I had to reprogram the router and re-open/re-map the ports 5060-6061 (UDP) and 10000 -20000 (UDP) and to re-enable the UPnP.
