At this time Dell Voice is not yet offering the ability to port numbers from N.S.

I don't think you can. Perhaps for some areas near Halifax, so, your best plan is to call customer service who should be able to tell you for sure.

You may be able to get a DID from a different provider and port to that. I am in St. John's NL and have a local number from another provider ($1/month) but I did not port my number. If your needs are simple (only calling one or two friends and vice versa) why not call each other using direct computer to computer voip or perhaps a phone-computer hybrid. In time perhaps there will be better coverage in the Atlantic Provinces but I suspect that we might have to wait a while.

Actually, my wife uses our home phone a lot. Dell Voice would have worked out great.

What is a DID?

Direct inward dialing is what DID means. What it is is a phone number that you can connect in various ways and one of those ways is to a SIP/voip service if they allow it. I have a St. John's NL DID that is connected to my provider. So, when my nubmer is called it rings my phone that is registered to my provider just like a normal phone. I can make outgoing calls through the provider as one would from a normal phone. This is similar to how FPL/DellVoice works which is a great service in places like Toronto where local DIDs are available and most local calls are free but not so much here.

I have noticed, unfortunately, that it only works for DV accounts and not FPL accounts .. shame ... or I would have had a lot of referrals, but it does not recognize my FPL account info...

Yes, but it is all over the FONGO site, and THERE it did not say anything about being specific to DV! There are times when if you did not know that FPL existed, one would think that Fongo==DV from the way that the Fongo website hypes DV (and all but ignores FPL).

PORT Status tool

Post by TheHardy »

I again re-iterate a request for a webbased "Can I Port my Number?" tool ...

3 outcomes should be possible....

YES - you can certainly port your number!
NO - Fongo does not currently offer porting in your area
MAYBE - your number MAY be portable, but we need more info - please contact us!

I *still* think this would be of large benefit to a vast swath of customers! :)
