The voice mail system through my home phone does not recognize any dial tone instructions... ie I do *98, get into voice mail, and press 1, nothing happens, the menu keeps on going as if it can't hear or recognize my phone.
I can only get to the VM using the softphone app

Look in your settings for "SEND DTMF" option. I don't have the device so I can't help you where to find it, but when you get there it should have 3 options. Try one of the other options to the one you have now.
If you find it, remember where it is because you might have to change it back again if you have problems with automated systems in the future.
