Changing Area Code/Phone number ???

Post by tanny »

Here's our Problem(s)/Scenario(s):

I presently have a just one residential (freephonline-Voip) number:
(613)-xxx-yyyy

We have recently moved from Ottawa, Ontario (Canada), to Windsor, Ontario (Canada).

We simply want to CHANGE, if possibe, our "area-code" only, so that the new (voip) number will have the "new" area-code but same number:
(519)-xxx-yyyy
--------------------------------------

Sooo, is the above possible, WITHOUT having to "Re-Registar" with a new account/email + PAY $$$ another $50, .... ???

Worst case scenario would be that we can't keep our old Voip number with the "new" area-code. But even then, we NEED to able to
CHANGE the area-code from "613" -> "519".
And, if that means having to change the Voip number as well, then that's fine, no choice.

Now, someone in Freephoneline Tech Support/Accounting told me that I would have to "...Register a new account/email, and pay another $50,..., becuase that is the ONLY way they can do it,..." ? huh.

Can someone here please EXPLAIN why I have to do all that again, simply because we moved to another city (Windsor), within the same province of Ontario, Canada ???!!!
:?

EDIT: anyway, I don't even mind paying an extra $25, or even $50, just to change my area code for my existing Freephoneline (Voip) number. ?

Thanks again.
Respectfully, and thanks for any help here...

Janet.

Hi Janet,

The agent you spoke with is correct. In order to obtain a number in your new area, you will need to sign up a new account.

We can not offer to change just the area code as the NXX may not be in the new area, or, even if the the NXX is in the area, we may not have have a block in it, or someone else may already have the number.

This is done as the original number you signed up for, to a specific location, is still yours and will continue to be yours.

@tanny
I am not 100% sure if this still works, but what I would do if I were you, is sign up for a free Windsor number from Dellvoice (not FPL because it used to be that you can not forward an FPL number to another FPL number). Activate Dellvoice then forward all calls to the FPL Ottawa number. Windsor callers would not even know that their calls are received on the Ottawa number. Old friends in Ottawa can still call the FPL Ottawa number as a local call to them.

I know that it is not the perfect solution, however it has some merits worth considering.

When calling them back however, it would show the number from the account that is active and making the call.

That is true and that is why I said that it is not the perfect solution.

This raises an interesting question --- in the above scenario, if Janet were to call in, would a support agent be able to assist her in getting perhaps the same -LINE number (last 4 digits), rather than the random number assignment of signing up online?

And the whole issue about having to re-register and pay for another unlock shows the differences between traditional (POTS and wireless) service and VOIP service ... as VOIP is more "nomadic" and not fixed to a specific locale.

Even if calling in and speaking to an agent, they are unable to pick and choose the numbers being assigned.
