PAP2T-NA connects but unable to dial numbers

Post by Megabyte »

Hi

I have a very strange problem with my PAP2T-NA.
I bought it very recently and set it up using the Provisioning File from sebastian.barbieri. http://forum.fongo.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=1243
I set both "NAT Mapping Enable" and "NAT Keep Alive Enable" to "Yes".
It worked great the first night. I could do outgoing calls. I could receive incoming calls. Voice quality was good!
Suddenly, it stopped working properly.

Let me explain my current situation below:

I am using a corded phone connected directly to the PAP2T-NA. This device is connected to a Cisco E4200 router.
For testing purposes, I put the PAP2T-NA in DMZ. It seems that it connects to my Freephoneline account correctly.

When I pick up the phone, I hear a dial tone. However, it is ALWAYS there, even after pressing a number!
After 10 seconds, I hear the busy tone.
Thus, I am unable to make outgoing calls now.

I can receive incoming calls. The phone rings and I even see a Caller ID.
I can hear the caller's voice fine.
However, my voice is all messed up on the caller's side! (it's as if my voice is being filtered or not processed properly or something)

I have another problem that MIGHT be related:
Picking up the phone and dialing **** does NOTHING.
I am unable to factory reset! (I was also unable to use this method to obtain the IP address of the PAP2T-NA. I had to find out using my DHCP routing table in my router)
I tried this when the PAP2T-NA is connected to my router. I also tried this without connecting it to my router. Same result, except connecting to my router gives a dial tone.

Summary and my current hypothesis:
I suspect that my PAP2T-NA does not recognize my dial sounds. My voice is messed up too in incoming calls (according to the caller).
I'm also unable to dial **** to access the Configuration Option Menu.
I tried changing phones to see if it was my phone's problem. No luck.
It worked the first day. It stopped working after.

Please help me diagnose the problem!

It could be a problem with your ATA.

Where did you get it from, and how old is it?

I bought it from an Ebay seller from China, Hong Kong. After doing a lot of reading online, I suspect I might have a fake one. Maybe.

However, I looked up the MAC address and it says the vendor is "Cisco-Linksys, LLC".
The MAC address and serial number on the stick both match what's displayed in the Info page.
It looks very much like a genuine one... so I'm not too sure.
I try not to jump to conclusions.

I got it last week on Thursday. I set it up on that same day and it worked until Friday afternoon.
I've been playing with the configs. Some configs give me dial tone, some don't (changing codecs, closing ports, etc).

I think I will try to get another one from somewhere else, unless I manage to make it work again by some miracle.

Have you tried plugging the phone into Line 2? or Line 1 if you are using Line 2.

Even the fakes can work OK. I would try and get a reset done on it, but that is going to be very hard if it does not respond to dial commands.

On some PAP2T I think there are reset pins on the board. You have to open it up though. I think you have to power it down, short the two reset pins, then power it up holding the short for 2 seconds. I've never had to do this so only try this as a last resort when everything else has failed.

I tried both Lines 1 and 2. They both behave the same.
Tonight, I will try to short the reset pins and hope it'll work again.

Is there any setting in the PAP2T that would change the sounds coming from the phone connected to it?
From the caller's side, everything sounds distorted. I'm not sure how to describe it.
I'm quite sure this is why the PAP2T doesn't even recognize dial sounds. They must be messed up too.

I finally bought a second PAP2T-NA from a more reliable source.
I just plugged it in and configured it. It works perfectly fine on the first try!

And I think I pretty much confirmed that the first ATA I bought was a clone.
On the stickers, the printing is low-resolution and the french text is full of typos.
Even worse, the cloned unit is not compatible with the stand that came with my new unit.
It looks almost real. Even the MAC address is correct. It's quite surprising.

Anyways, thanks for the support!
