Won't receive incoming call
Hello
I just helped a buddy to port from Bell to FPL but there is a problem when he plugged his ATA device to wall jack telephone so it would spread to other location in his house. He can make out going call only for incoming call did not ring his phone and went to VM
If he plugs the phone direct to ATA device and he would receive incoming call as out going call too.
Any one has any idea why? He just cancel Bell about 2 days ago so I would say wait for awhile then see

Re: Won't receive incoming call
The first thing that comes to mind is that the house jack wiring is not disconnected from the incoming Bell line.
Put a volt meter on the wall jack and see if there is a voltage there (when the ATA is disconnected)

Well he disconnected from Bell still has dial tone active
but he told me today no dial tone so he plugged ATA to wall jack. He said he got dial tone and he could make out going call no problem but for receiving call no ring at all and went to VM
I will test it sometimes next week but from what he said to me before after ported to FPL he picked his phone still has dial tone but today no dial so I think it is disconnected already

Re: Won't receive incoming call
what kind of ATA is he using? It is possible the REN is not high enough on the ATA to power all the jack in the house (this can not be changed by a setting as it is simply how strong the ATA is) and this would cause a failure in making the phones ring when there is an incoming call.

He used Linksys ATA.

Re: Won't receive incoming call
It has to be physically disconnected not just switched off by Bell. If he wants to use his house wiring then he has to get some wire cutters out and safely cut disconnect the incoming line from the rest of the house wiring. There is probably still a voltage on the jacks OR the ATA might actually be trying to make the exchange ring because it is now connected as a phone. It's not going to be able to do thatseagame2001 wrote:Well he disconnected from Bell still has dial tone active

If he is on DSL of some kind, remember he still needs the incoming pair for that otherwise he won't have Internet.

Only if there are phones plugged in. There would have to be miles and miles of cable in the house to put enough load on it to stop the phone from ringing. There could always be a short in the house wiring I guess.FONGO_mike wrote:what kind of ATA is he using? the primary pull for the power is not from the length of the wires in the house, but from the actual phones. Most ATA's are meant to power two phones or three is they are powered cordless phones. this can however vary greatly depending on the individual phones.

Re: Won't receive incoming call
What I meant Mike was if there was not any phones plugged in, there would have to be miles of wiring in the house to start effect the ringers. It is a very unlikely event that the length of wire in a house will have anything to do with it, so maybe it wasn't helpful of me to bring it upFONGO_mike wrote: the primary pull for the power is not from the length of the wires in the house, but from the actual phones. Personally I think it is more likely that there is either a short on the wiring, or it is still connected to the local exchange. The phone obviously works because it is fine when plugged straight into the ATA. Even if the house was overloaded with phones, I would have expected at least one of the lower REN phones to give a little whimper.
If someone hasn't been busy with a pair of wire cutters, I think the jack plugs are still connect to the main Bell network.

Re: Won't receive incoming call
OK here what happened I brought a splitter over and tried to plug 2 different phones in one jack and no incoming call so I guess did not have enough power to support more than one phone
What you do guys think?

Re: Won't receive incoming call
Did you try with just one phone plugged in? (i generally suggest to people to use a cordless phone kit, with one main base station and multiple extensions on it)
