Bell Fibe Internet with Fongo Home Phone

Post by Privatepilot »

I am interested in switching my home internet provider from Cogeco Turbo 14 to Bell Fibe 15/10 service. Just concerned the fongo home phone may not work with Bell fibe internet and the wireless router that Bell provides. If anyone can share insight, that would be appreciated

Bell Fibe 15/10 service is provided with a SAGEMCOM 2864 modem/router (4 ethernet ports, 1 WAN port, 2 USB ports and 1 HPNA port).

All you need is to plug the Grandstream ATA to one of the SAGEMCOM ethernet ports. It's "plug and play".

I use Fibe 15/10 and never experienced a problem with Fongo home phone.

Quick question for all the gurus out there. I have a cord from my fongo Ata connected from the back of the device to the phone jack on the wall. This has successfully wired all my jacks in the house with fongo service. I used to have cogeco home cable home phone and when i cancelled that service, i just unplugged the phone line from the cogeco box that went to the phone jack and used the fongo ata to do the same thing. When i switch to bell fibe internet in january, bell will have to run a dry loop pots line into my house. Will this mean that my exsting home wiring will be lost since the dry loop line will use it. In other words, will i have to plug my cordless phone right in the back of the ata. Or do you think i will still, somehow, be able to use fongo service from every wall jack in the house as i do now? Not a big deal either way. I would prefer to keep all jacks in house live with fongo service. Just curious

Sorry long question... I know :)

Have a good evening everyone

Not seeing your house, it is difficult to give you a definitive answer, but...

It sounds like your house jacks are disconnected from everything right now. I expect Cogeco did that when they installed their phone system. Somewhere along the route they would have disconnected the Bell pair that no doubt was coming into the house. They could have done this in your basement, or in a post outside your house. When Bell come back they will have to wire up at least one jack for the modem. Again, this will depend on how your house is, but I would explain to the engineer what you would like, which is probably to run a new dry look jack next to where you are going to put the modem. Tell him that you do not want the main house wiring touched, this way it won't interfere with your setup now. The house wiring is not Bell's, so really if this is what you want he should respect that. How easy it is to get a new jack installed next to where you want the modem of course depends on your house, but most phone cables have at least 2 pairs, so he should be able to utilize one pair for the existing jack, and the other pair for the new jack (assuming there is a jack where you want your modem). Just talk to the engineer that comes to install the jack.

Most engineers will be willing to do simple things like this, especially if plied with coffee and doughnuts :D I know my customers always got what they wanted if I could smell the coffee post on.

Jake thanks so much for the detailed response. Have 6 mini wires in my existing line (house is 12 yrs old) so hopefully they can partition the line for the dry loop to the modem and use the other wires for my existing wiring in the house

You are bang on when you say that cogeco would have set up my home wiring before by disengaging the bell pair outside at a box at the front of my townhouse.

Anyways we'll see how it goes. Will be sure to have coffee and some goodies for the engineer when he comes out

The more important question of the nite.... Ipad, nexus 10, samsung tablet, or new microsoft rt tablet. Which system should i buy into. Microsoft, google, or mac

Personally I am hating Windows 8. It just seems pointless on a normal computer that doesn't have a touch screen - even then it would just about pass, but for me it's a tablet OS. I don't think I am wrong in saying that most domestic computer users have Windows rather than a Mac; so it seems to me that they are forcing this new OS style onto us with the sole intention of increasing their cell phone OS sales.Being able to link your computer and phone must sway some people into buying a Windows powered phone rather than an iPhone or Android. Personally I don't like the clumsy desktop OS, and the clumsy way they are trying to increase their sales.

If you are a general consumer and don't really 'tinker' with computers, then I would say go for Mac. Buy it for the Facetime and Apple messaging if nothing else, it really is effortless and hardly get's blocked on free WIFI networks.
If you are more into doing stuff with your devices, then go for Android. I find it does take a few more steps and pushing around to get things done, but usually you can do it.

I like my Mac devices - but only as communication devices. My Android devices have all sorts of 'tools' on them that help me do the things I like. I don't have a windows phone, but all the computers here bar one run windows. Only one laptop has windows 8, and that hardly ever get's touched in favour of the windows 7 machines.

Good luck with your engineer when he comes. Some are quite stubborn and set in their ways, but I bet he buckles for a nice hot coffee in the cold we have now :D

In my experience Bell doesn't have to do anything in your house for the dry loop. It's all on their end. They just need to assign a dummy number to your internet account. Not sure how much different Fibe is from DSL. What you are describing sounds like a POTS Splitter where they split the data from the voice to give your internet a cleaner line.

I can only get 2mbps DSL and have a POTS Splitter installed and a jack with data only at my DSL Modem. I used the spare two lines from the data only jack at my modem to back feed the Fongo Phone line back to where the POTS Splitter is, which is also where the rest of my phone jacks in the house go to. I then hooked those 2 lines to my main feed to my phone jacks in the house and now all my phone jacks in the house are active.

So the good news is I got bell fibe internet 15 mgps download 10 mbps upload today. Internet service is great, as is the TV, i might add.

Plugged ata into back of new Fibe wireless modem. Works like a charm. Sound quality on phone is slightly better than with cogeco internet 14/1. Very happy overall

Only downside to all of this is since I was switching from cogeco to bell fibe internet, bell had to run in a dry loop line. As such, they needed to use existing home wiring to get the dry loop service to the location where I wanted the modem. As a result, i can no longer use my jacks in the wall for Fongo. The tech was great and did some tests, but couldn't make it happen. So cordless phone now plugged right into ata, no worries.

Overall bell fibe internet is great, tv is amazing and fongo home phone as great as ever. My dtmf sounds still occur, that really seems to be only ongoing issue. I will update forum in that thread re: talk off dtmf sounds

I think if you use ATA 9V or less will not give enough power for other jacks in your house

If you wanted to run the phone to light up all your jacks, there are splitters that you can use to run it back through the lines in the house. I can not really comment how as i do not know you set-up, but it is usually just a three line splitter that is needed to set it up allowing the DSL signal to reach your modem, feed the phone line back in and one to keep using the same jack.
