Post by NsL-HD »

I have a Grandstream ATA that I got from freephoneline I have been experiencing problems such as people cant hear me properly and my voice cuts in and out. I was told that I need to set the QoS on my router (Linksys EA4500) for voip. Can anyone help me out?

My E3200 works good for FPL, your EA4500 should be up for the task as well, so long as you have a reliable internet connection. Try this to test your connection first:

http://myspeed.visualware.com/indexvoip.php

For Cisco/Linksys routers you can open the router software, then click to change settings, then click to change advanced settings. You can also just enter the IP address of the router into your browser. Once you are into the admin setup pages, click Applications and Gaming, then click QoS. I entered the following info:

Catagory: Voice Device
Name: Grandstream (Don't think it really matters, as this is just a label)
MAC Address: Enter the exact unique MAC address found on the ATA
Priority: High

Click apply then click to save the settings. I'd also power cycle the router and the ATA after all that, then go back to make sure it shows up on the QoS page Summery.

This is for upload only when using the Cisco software. Usually you will have more bandwidth for download. If your speeds are on the lower end, I'd stop any heavy downloads before you pickup the phone.

I noticed the quality and reliability of my calls after I upgraded to a 2.5Mbps upload plan from my ISP as well.

Would this be applicable to any router that has QoS settings? In particular, would I need to assign IP to devices or just use a MAC addresses? Allowing outgoing/incoming 200kb/s or some such bandwidth? Has any verified what the value is in terms of maximum/minimum? I have about 22 down and 1 upload...

I am notice some poor upload communication when running games + skype & regular voip phone calls.. hear well but outgoing communication is broken, static is heard, some delays etc...

I think I need to unload my old failthful Asus router wl500g premium... after 10 years... it has a priority for VOIP/Streaming but it seems to screw up call more than help... Beside with 1gig network cards in desktops and bandwidth might be nice to tap the speed..

I went out and picked up a E3200...

It was strange to set up. Had some difficulties using the Cisco utility... I connected once but then had issues.. Opted to use the manual method logging...
Set up QoS making phone 300kbs upload max. I heard 128 kbs at high priority is enough.. made kid's gaming computer a low priority ;)

I too upgraded bandwidth speeds hoping to resolve phone issues.. had no impact on phone quality...
The upgrade in router seems to improved phone quality had a couple of calls one was from an IP set up that I had issues for the caller to hear me, that call was crystal clear both ways...I made a call that seemed not influenced by me surfing...

The real test will be webinars using phone to hear.. I had issues that i was not heard the last time...

I have an update on the upgrade of ISP bandwidth and QoS E3200 router...

Initially, still had issues with phone service.. Set QoS phone worked great... Upgraded router to new F/W then hit the wall...
way below what I was paying for... I was expecting 28mg d/l and 1mg up.. at best I was getting 5-12mg up and 0.07 to 0.09 up...

reconfig router from factory default set QoS manual still not better, set to automatic for ATA (PAT2T NA) well... It came back to expected speed both down and up stream...

Not sure what is happening but it quick...again..
Any idea what happened? Speculate??
