Temporarily suspend mobile service and number porting

I was wondering is it would be possible to port my number if I have suspend my mobile service .
I was to go the data route only on iphone but want to try it for a month before I make a total commitment .
So would could my number be port under suspend service or would it have to be activated to port number

Your current provider will not allow a port-out of an inactive account.
