I am new to FONGO and searching for a VOIP adapter. MIght buy use as an option at KIjiji or new one at tiger direct SPA112 is $53 + tax.
I know Grandsteam HT 286 is being promoted by Freephoneline.ca
ANy difference between Cisco spa112 versus Linksys pap2T or grandstream HT 286? Someone also promoting Motorola VT 2442 at kijiji, stating better then PAP2T.
The more I read the more I am confuse. It seemed SPA112 can also do fax, which I hardly use fax but nice to have that option. Is PAP2T more behind than SPA112. I will be using freephoneline.ca for my VOIP.
another brand is Obihai, https://www.acrovoice.ca/obistore/
I am using a cable modem to be hooked up with tecksavvy, then my trendnet wireless router , then a voip adapter.
THanks

I think they all have their quirks and no doubt you will get people saying good and bad about all the ATAs you have listed.
Personally I use a PAP2T and have not had one ounce of problems with it. The PAP2T also supports the T38 Codec (which is supposed to be for faxing). I have had a fair amount of success with it as long as the faxes are fairly simple. IE simple text rather than pictures.
Having said that, FPL moved from the PAP2T to the Grandstream ATA. Make of that what you will.
The long and short of it is, you will be OK with whatever ATA you choose. Try to stay away from the China copies though. A lot of it will come down to if you want/need one or two lines. Remember though you can only register one device to FPL at a time so a 2 line ATA will only be useful if you have two VOIP companies you want to connect to, or two FPL accounts.

Grandstream HT286 is a good ATA and I have been using it for more than one year.
Faxing works well with T38 protocol. Pics will not go thru if in color but will be transfered successfully in B&W max resolution 1200. Faxes are still widely used in Canada for government, insurance and medical services.
If you need to convert a color doc to B&W before faxing it, without printing the doc and re-scanning it, here is a workaround: edit the doc in any format (Word, Exel, PDF), type CTRL-P and choose FAX, put a bogus recipient name and fax number, preview the fax, save the B&W doc then cancel the fax. You can then fax the new B&W doc.

I would stay away from Cisco products as they are extremely unforgiving if you have even the slightest misconfiguration. They work when everything is properly set up though.
Obi and Grandstream products are pretty good.
Much more important is the router. You need a good one. Preferably one that can be flashed with a 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT, so you have another option if the default firmware is poor at routing packets correctly.
