No outgoing calling except to Voicemail

Post by fongo2u »

I noticed that Freephoneline (I'm in Winnipeg, Canada) wasn't making outgoing calls. Incoming calling is fine. So I reinstalled the Freephoneline program and noticed a new interface. Still can't make outgoing calls. I input the number, hit Call button or Enter and Calling 123-456-7890 appears. But no sounds.

Also the volume level is WAY too high. There seems to be no way of changing this. That is not very well thought out at all. Mic control isn't so important but speaker level sure is.

DSL modem, no router, internet connection works fine for other VOIP services, using XP Pro SP3. What I cannot comprehend is how could the Test come back OK? The software itself says the connection is fine. But I wonder if that could occur even though a port is blocked. I think I forwarded the UDP ports 6060 and 13000 in the modem's control panel but I'm not sure if its done properly.

Hi there,

Thanks for providing this information. To assist you further, please let me know the following:

-other voip services work fine- are you refering to ATA or softphones?
- what is the model of your DSL modem/router?
-was this working for you recently and now stopped working?

Thanks,

I tried replying to you via the PM but is just stuck in the Outbox. Nothing in Sent so I guess there's some issue with the system. Anyway, this is what I attempted to send.

Softphones

- what is the model of your DSL modem/router?

Actiontec GT701D

Yes - freephoneline did work for a while for both incoming and outgoing. I tried reinstalling it as well. I have 2 version of freephoneline setup programs. One is 5918kb and the other is 34157kgb. I think the smaller one is the newer one. I just installed the newer one (its the 5918kb one). I did a test. It said my port 13000 should be available and its unable to send/receive sound data. So I think the software is working. Just have to fix the port. Perhaps the reason the program wasn't working before was that the software wasn't updated.

When I forwarded the port there were 3 settings. I was told to use UDP and forward the 6060 and 13000 ports which I thought I did. It asks for port start, end and map. So I just used the same number for each. Should the port map be different I wonder?

I'm getting close!

Hi there,

UDP- 5060-5061
UDP- 6060-6061
UDP- 13000-13001

I have found a similar model- please see below:

http://portforward.com/english/routers/ ... neline.htm

Please try and let me know- if there are still issues, send me a PM.

What about Port Map? Leave that empty? It needs the field to be filled.

Hi there,

I cannot see any setting for portmap below:

http://portforward.com/english/routers/ ... neline.htm

Not sure why it is required for your setup.

Can you please double check?

Thanks!

Yes, I said it won't let me save the settings without filling out the Port Map field.

Hi there,

Port mapping is not required when you do port range forwarding. Unless you want to do port triggering- which should not be the case.

So what should I enter into the Port Map field? It will not let me leave it empty.

Hi there,

You should try undo your changes and try again to setup port range fwd(not port triggering)

Please try and let us know.

Well I see no mention of port range forwarding in the menu of this modem. Just Port Forwarding which unfortunately needs something to be inserted into the Port Map field for it to work. I have the firewall settings off on the modem. So does that mean it shouldn't need any port forwarding at all? And if I turn Windows Firewall off (temporarily to test this) should that also eliminate the need to worry about that?

I looked at the manual for your modem, and this is probably the bit you need.
For multiple ports:
1. Enter the rule name in the “Rule Name” text box. The name is usually based
on the application or game title.
2. Set “Protocol” to “TPC.”
3. Enter the starting port number of the port range in the “Port Start” and “Port
Map Start” text boxes, and the last port of the range in the “Port End” text
box. For example, if the port range is 5000 to 6000, enter “5000” in the “Port
Start” and “Port Map Start” text boxes, and “6000” in the “Port End” text box.
4. Click Apply.
5. Change Protocol to “UDP.”
6. Enter the port numbers again, as in step 3.
7. Click Apply again. The rule’s TPC and UDP mapping appear at the bottom of
the screen.
8. Click Back.
9. Select the computer on which to open the ports, then click User.
10. Select the rule, then click Add to move the rule to the “Applied Rule” text box.
11. Click Apply.
You don't need to do the TCP bit, but I guess it wouldn't hurt too much.
If you are using the softphone then you will probably end up doing this 3 times for the 3 different ranges given above.

This is where I read the manual from http://www.actiontec.com/products/manua ... .4.1.1.pdf
The bit about port forwarding starts on page 38.

I never use an ATA. Presently the freephoneline softphone is being used but I just bought an IP phone (Grandstream) but haven't hooked i up yet. So I was wondering if UDP only applies to softphone or IP phone configurations? And what about TCP? Is one for ATA's specifically?

VOIP with FPL only uses the UDP protocol, so it will be the same for the desktop softphone or an ATA. The only thing that would change is the RTP ports; these are the 13000 and 13001 ports for the softphone. If you do use another 3rd party device (after buying the unlock key of course) you will just need to check what RTP ports that device uses. It varies from device to device so I can't say for sure, and you can actually change it yourself.

At the end of the day, I don't think it is going to do any harm what so ever forwarding both TCP and UPD ports, but only the UDP protocol is used.
