porting number

Post by grovepark »

I cancelled my land line and internet with Bell and the termination day is May 30.
I plan to port the number to Fongo as a mobile phone number using with dry loop DSL as hi speed internet.

Worst case the landline is cancelled on May 30 then the porting would complete around mid June (assuning 14 days porting process).
I read in here not to tell to cancel but too late now, so should I start the porting process with Fongo ASAP to minimize the damage or wait to near the end of May?

Mean while I get a Fongo account and a free number to use temporarily, once the ported number is available , will it be assigned to the my existing Fongo account? ( no need to create another Fongo account, correct?)

Thanks for any input.

I'm not sure that Bell will release the number now. I think if you really wanted to keep the number I would phone Bell up and cancel the cancellation, then get the porting done ASAP. I know this is probably going to cause you an extra months payment for the phone line, but at least you should be able to port your number.

Maybe Fongo Support can confirm what will happen here, but I suspect Bell will refuse to release the number. You can still cancel the internet, but I would reactivate the phone for the time being.

When you port a number in, it replaces the number you were given by Fongo. So you are correct in what you say there.

Thanks Jake.
It's a bit hairy, if i keep the landline for an extra month, it would be a wet DSL loop when I hook up the internet with ElectronicsBox and then convert to dryloop DSL later when porting is done. (is that counted as 2 installations for ElectronicsBox?) Or is it possible to have a dryloop DSL at the start regardless of the landline number? I guess i need to find that out.

Another question though, if my wife have mobile phone A with Fongo number A, I have mobile phone B with Fongo number B then does Fongo number B work on mobile phone A?

I can't answer you about your DSL questions. You will have to talk to the companies - but I would avoid telling Bell that you are going to port the number out. When I dropped Bell I dropped the phone first so they put me on a dry loop. Then I moved the DSL so it all kind of fell into place. I would talk to ElectronicsBox and see what they say.

As for the mobile questions (mobile, not cell? Expat by any chance?). If the account was created on an iDevice it can only be used on an iDevice. It can be any other iDevice just not an Android. If the account was created online or on the Android, you can use it on whatever device you like (that supports the Fongo App). This includes swapping from device to device. In fact I quite often sign into my wrong account on my iPod.

I called to cancel the cancellation. Bell spooked me, it said there was no record of cancelllation, let me hold for an hour then said system ddin't let them do the cancellation today, so I cancelled the cancellation, let it cool down for maybe a couple months, then will start the porting process.

EBox and Velcom said no problem for dryloop DSL coexisting with landline number and when the landline number cancelled dryloop DSL continues to work, if not they will fix it without charge. I just repeated what i was told, true or not one has to check it out.

So to start the porting process to Fongo, I just give Fongo authorization to port the number and should not say anything whatsover to Bell. I always thought Bell required 30 days noticed before cancelling the service, and that goes for porting as well. Lesson learned. I really need to keep the same number.

Somewhere along the way you might be stung for an extra month for the phone. Of course they don't need to do this, but they are not going to be that compliant when they know they are loosing a customer to VOIP - or just loosing a customer I guess. The way I see it is you will easily make that up the next month or so, so let them throw their little fit :)

If you have a Fongo account, then you should be able to start the port from within your admin area. Log in and click on the online store. Just make sure you are porting to the right account as it WILL replace the Fongo number you have for that account already. Start a new account if you want to keep the Fongo numbers you have already.

You mentioned that you want to port it to a mobile app, but you don't say if you have it already so it is a little difficult to tell you where to start. It shouldn't be too difficult to work out though :)

I am thinking about following your way that is cancelling the landline number first, then add dryloop into the existing Bell DSL and cancelling DSL immediately. it looks a bit awkward there and I need to pay one or two extra months for the internet with regular high price.

My 2nd thought is to cancel the Bell internet first, keep the landline number for one or two months then port the landline number later. Since the landline phone is well regulated by CRTC, Bell cannot charge me any price it wants. worst case I might have to pay double DSL installations for the independent ISP, but that's ok with me.

Please tell me which you think is better (the former or the later). Money is a factor but the main goal is still to keep the same phone number.

I already have Fongo number, the important number I want to keep is my wife's number (now you know why all extra effort). I'll give her my existing android phone to use with her would-be ported number, I will get another android phone for me to use with my existing Fongo number. That's why I asked some side questions previously.

Thanks again very much for your help

If everything is back to a non cancelled state, I would probably start the port straight away (don't tell Bell) and cancel/move the DSL now. You will have to put a bit of trust in whoever is supplying your DSL to make sure it is always connected, but I would say that as long as you kept them informed about what is going on there won't be a problem. Sometimes the simplest things create the biggest problems however :?

It's time to port my number.
Using "on line store" error message came up "IP country match invalid. Please call the Call Center to make the purchase"
I was using my name with my credit card, while the account holder is my wife name, wonder if that was the problem.

Tried a 2nd time, with my wife name and her credit card, clicked "complete puchase" wait for the response for a while but nothing. I clicked "complete purchase" a 2nd time, error message came up "error: transaction roll back, duplicate number..."

Anybody know what's gone wrong? I sent FONGO a request regarding the 1st attempt purchase. Fongo has no number to call.

I purchased on line with my credit card a few times recently from few on line stores, all smooth sailing and user-friendly web response but not with FONGO.
