Using Thomson TG784 as ATA only

Post by dsb3232 »

Hello,

I have attempted to search the forums for an answer to this question to no avail, so please excuse me if this info is contained somewhere here already.

My situation is as follows: I had originally signed up for FPL phone service and internet service together, and purchased a pre-configured Thomson TG784 combination router/modem/phone device. I have now started a new internet service (Start Communications, cable reseller). I would like to somehow set the Thomson TG784 to act only as the ATA device for my phones - I assume that it should be able to plug into my network and use the internet service provided by the new router (an ASUS RT-56U) to service the phones. So far, it does not seem to be working for me - the phone number is not registered. Is there something I need to do to the Thomson to set it as an ATA only device?

For reference. my setup looks like this:

Thomson -> switch -> Asus router -> new cable modem

Thanks in advance for any insight.

I actually had a very similar situation, except I changed out my TG784 for a separate modem and router so I could run dd-wrt.

What I did was to re-configure the modem in BRIDGE mode (click on set up the router wizzard) and make sure you untick the box that says to start the DHCP server when you get to that part. I have then connected the TG784 to my modem though the WAN port. I can't see any difference if it also went though the switch in your case.

I don't remember changing anything in the actual phone section, but you might need to double check that all your settings are right.

Thanks for the quick reply Jake - I went through the setup wizard as you suggested and set the Thomson TG784 to bridge mode without DHCP. I have also plugged the ethernet cable into the WAN port as you stated. Unfortunately, the phone number under the Telephony section still shows an X under Registered and calls go straight to voice mail.

Could there be a difference due to the fact that I am using a cable connection now instead of DSL?

Thanks,
Dan

Nope, shouldn't make a difference. As long as it is an internet connection that isn't restricting VoIP ports you should be fine.

I would double check your settings in the phone section, and that your account is still active. Just make sure they didn't do something silly like deactivate the account when you switched their DSL off. Load your account settings in a free Soft Phone and see if it works through that.

Also I would plug a computer into one of the network ports on the TG784 and make sure you are all connected. At any time you should be able to connect to the TG through a computer connected to your switch. I left my TG with the address of 192.168.1.254 and I can still get into the admin side of things fine even though the computer isn't directly connected to one of the network ports.

Thanks again - I have downloaded a soft phone and that works fine with my account details, so it is not on that end. I can connect to the TG through the switch as well as you mentioned (that is how I can see that it shows not registered). I don't suppose you might have any other ideas? :)
