2 FPL lines using the same Internet Connection?

Post by donx »

I have registered 2 FPL phone numbers for my 2 condo units, both are sharing the same High Speed Internet Connection, the first unit is using direct connection to the Wireless Router, the second unit is using a wireless bridge to connect to the second ATA.

Using them separately, they work perfectly, the quality of the calls are great, both can receive and make calls...

However, when I tried to make calls between them, the caller can hear the recipient, but the recipient can NOT hear the caller.

Please help...

Thanks in advance.

You'll want to set them each on different ports, then port forward each accordingly in the router

Thanks for the reply, Steve. What are the ports I should forward to 2 atas from the router setting? should I also change anything in the atas? Thanks again.

One ATA can remain on UDP 5060
If you aren't using Line 2 in ATA 1, then change ATA 2 to use UDP 5061.
Then forward 5060 from router to ATA 1
and forward 5061 from router to ATA 2

Still doesn't work after I forwarded port 5060 to ATA1 and 5061 to ATA2 (in the SIP Port setting of ATA2, I also tried to change 5060 to 5061 to match the forwarded port, still no help).

I then thought I might need more ports to forward to each ATA, so I forwarded both 5060 and 5061 to ATA1, and both 6060 and 6061 to ATA2, still no change.

Basically, both lines can make or receive calls at the same time no problem while sharing the same Internet Connection (even before I tried any changes to forward the ports), but when one FPL line calls the other FPL line, ATA 2 can never hear ATA1. There got be some workaround

For now, the only way to make calls between the 2 condo unit is to call the cell phones instead...

Hm, both devices are set to the same default codec, and use preferred codec only is set to no?
If you can place a call between the two ATAs, then PM me the exact details of the call (originating number, terminating number and date/time), I'll see if the SIP log shows any errors.

Yes, both are set to the same default codec, and use preferred codec only is set to no.
I will pm you the log I found from 2 of my accounts (using 2 addresses of my 2 condo units), the interesting thing is that not all of them are captured in both lines, ATA1 only records the calls initialized from it to ATA2, ATA2 only records calls initialized by it to ATA1. Thanks again.

Somebody has posted an interesting suggestion to me as:
"The pap2t has configuration for line 1 and line 2. Did you try using line 1 for device 1 and line 2 on device 2?"

I will definately give it a shot once I get home. :)

Well, it never worked, no matter what I try, I know plugged line 2 on ATA2, and it still can not hear line 1 on ATA1, no matter whether it is line1 on ATA1 dialing line 2 on ATA2. And on the other hand, line 1 on ATA1 can ALWAYS hear line 2 on ATA2.

I also tried to enable UPNP on both the main router and the wireless repeater (where ATA2 is connected to), so port forwarding can be done automatically.

This is happening all the time, no matter I have port forwarding or not...

Anyway, I guess the worst scenario is that I can live with calling cell phones between 2 condo units when other calls still work.

Try this:
Set one of ATA's Prefec Codec Only 'Yes' and another one is 'No'
If this still doesn't work, try set both to 'Yes'.

I had exact same problem and I fixed it with above.

Just curious, can a single PAP2T support two different FPL Numbers (one per line?)
Might not help in your exact situation, but I could see in similar condo situations where one might be able to feed the internal phone lines for each condo off one port or the other.

It's my understanding you can usually support upto 3 or 4 phones stable off one PAP2T phone port.

Of course, a PAP2T is a two line adapter which supports 4 copper telephone lines on each port.

Try this:

Go to your PAP2 configuration>advance>SIP tab
Go down to your RTP Parameters
and set RTP Port Min: to RTP Port Max range in a way so that it doesn't overlap between two adapters.
Now try calling and see if it works. If it still doesn't work, go to your router and forward appropriate RTP port range to each adapter (UDP).

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks for the suggestions. :)

I tried to distinguish the RTP port ranges between two ATA as you suggested, but no change, line 1 of ATA1 still can NOT be heard from line 2 of ATA2.

Tried to forward these 2 ranges of ports to 2 ATAs accordingly, still the same thing.

Thanks for the tips, setting Prefec Codec Only 'Yes' changed any calls to that line to voice mail, it won't even ring...

This is a new known issue since last week that we must set Prefec Codec Only to 'No'. :(

Do you use outbound proxy in your ATA settings. If you do, turn it off. And vice versa, if you don't, set it up and try.

If it still doesn't work, try setting a STUN server.

Also, do you use the second line of your ATA with another provider? If you don't, sign up for a free account with another provider (e.g Callcentric, BBPglobal) and then try calling the other ATA.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I tried to turn off and on outbound proxy mulitple times, nothing changed...

Not sure how to set up STUN server, will do some moe research.

Good point of trying other providers (for any of them, I will need to set up 2 accounts for 2 of my addresses), it will be good to test out the similar services for 2 lines calling each other while sharing the same internet connection. Not sure if I have time to set them up now, but it will be very interesting to find out.

Thanks again!

Here is my test result, without any router port forwarding and any tricks, I set up 2 bbpglobal accounts for my 2 units, and I can easily call, receive and hear perfectly between 2 units using bbpglobal accounts sharing the same Internet Connection my 2 existing FPL lines. All my 4 lines of 2 ATAs are occupied.

So it seems to be that it is somehow related to FPL, but my workaround is to set up free accounts bbpglobal and is I need to make calls between my 2 condo units, I just dedicated bbpglobal lines. :D

Re: 2 FPL lines using the same Internet Connection?

Actually I am thinking why bbpglobal works for me is that it has 2 different sip servers and I have connected to 2 of them from my two lines:

* sip1.bbpglobal.com:5190
* sip2.bbpglobal.com

One server is using port 5060 and the other is using 5190.

I wonder when I connect my 2 lines to FPL, can I use one line to connect to 5060 and use other line to other unpublished FPL SIP server port? I remembered some time ago, somebody mentioned other port other than 5060?

Thanks!

5060/5061 and 6060/6061 I believe.

The softphone defaults to 13000 and 13001, which may mean there's another set of connecting ports there... or that could just be port assignments at our end.

Well, tried to append these 5 ports when connecting to FPL SIP servers, all got "can not login" error from ATA message. :(

The port I am talking about is on the server, it looks to me there is only one port 5060 used on the server, if that's the case, that's the problem in my case here. No matter what port locally we use (5060,5061,6060,6061,13000 or 13001), I think the connected port on the FPL server is always 5060...

Glad BBpglobal works for you.

Port 5060 is the default. Normally, SIP servers will accept connection on a port range (5060-5080).

6060 is what softphone uses.

Don't think you can add the port number to FPL server like this 'voip.freephoneline.ca:5061'. You need to change the port number in your ATA settings.

Do you mind posting the screen shot of your ATA settings?
