Using FPL as a dedicated fax line
I have been doing a little reading in the forum already regarding fax on VoIP. However, there are a few things I am a little unclear on. According the Admin, FPL doesnt officially support fax service but its possible to use as the system supports it. For me, I would like to move my bell number that I have over to FPL. The line is basically going to be connected to a fax machine and only used for faxing in and out (no phone calls on this line). I already have PAP2T and I dont mind tweaking it using the forums and a little time to get it to work. Also, issue regarding voicemail on a fax line were being addressed. Is is possible to completely turn off voicemail (and possibly even call waiting) since I wont be needing that on the line. Secondly, most of the reply all talk about faxing out. I am more interested in receiving fax on my fax machine. Are there any known issues related to that?

There are ways to collect the fax on incoming even if your fax machine doesn't pick it up and it goes to the voice-mail. As such you usually don't see an issue with the incoming on the forum very often. Likewise receiving the fax, the ATA - > fax connection will be controlled by default at the rate the ATA can convert the signal.
The issue is when with Fax - > ATA, where the fax will rush to get the analog signal out at 56kbps+, but it's difficult to compress an analog signal and digitize it quickly/accurately. Ergo the high-quality/slow connection suggestions to improve your faxing operations.
I haven't tested it, but the networking theory suggests that outgoing will have many more issues than incoming.

Good luck. It won't work. I was never been able to receive a fax over VOIP. Sending works, but if you are sending a lot forget about it.d4diesel2 wrote: I am more interested in receiving fax on my fax machine. Are there any known issues related to that?

Hey it is possible to use your line for A DEDICATED FAX.
In fact I using for the same. I have Grandstream 502 ATA and HP J3680 All in one . I have connected this All in one as regular phone line and did the set up on the All In one that to use the line as in Fax Mode. So after the second ring it goes to Fax mode.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Is the Fax Mode a feature on FPL or on your Voip adapter? I have a PAP2T already which i would like to make use of. I will try to google some setting later on and report back on what i find.mapry2 wrote:I have connected this All in one as regular phone line and did the set up on the All In one that to use the line as in Fax Mode. Could you point me in the direction where i can get more info on collecting fax from voice-mail? Also, if i am not mistaking, Fax machine (not the modem on computer) dont connect on 56Kbps. they are usually around 28.8 kbps. would the voip line still have problem handling this speed? thank you in advance for all your replies.Bloodsong wrote:There are ways to collect the fax on incoming even if your fax machine doesn't pick it up and it goes to the voice-mail. Re: Using FPL as a dedicated fax line
I think I might have been slightly mis-interpreted here.
Essentially what I mean to say is: Receiving a fax in, should be relatively straightforward with native ATA settings, the fax machine (when receiving) won't see anything outside of the ordinary, it receives a phone call and picks it up.
SENDING a fax can be more complicated, as the ATA needs to convert a large telephone signal to a small digital signal.

Re: Using FPL as a dedicated fax line
Hey,
I just tried sending out Fax and it works. Nothing needs to be done from the ATA in my case. My Fax machine dialed the number and successfully transmitted the Fax.
Hope this helps.

Re: Using FPL as a dedicated fax line
Thank you everyone. I am in a process of waiting for my configuration file. So, once I have that I will try it out with PAP2T adapter and my panasonic fax machine and post results. I have gone with a new number number for now b/c if this doesnt work out, i can still keep my old bell line and my fax number. I am hoping that if this all works out, FPL will allow me to port over my bell number and replace the one they gave me. if it doesnt work out, I guess i can still use this FPL line as a second line for a year.
