How to keep personal VM greeting but disable voicemail?

Post by jeremywadford »

Hi!
I'd like my callers to be greeted with:
"Hi, I"m travelling a the moment. If you want to get in touch with me, please send an email to: xxxxx"

And then not give the option for the caller to leave a message.

How do I set that up?

Please help me out :-)

The short answer is you can't turn off the answer phone.

See, that makes me think that there's a long answer that will turn off the VM part after doing some really clever stuff.
Is there a long answer like that?

kind of.
You can set up a PBX at your house with your FPL account on it, then make your PBX pick up the call and then do whatever you want with it. Quite a few people here run PBX systems of various flavours (myself included), so it is OK to use one. Personally I didn't like the fairly short amount of ring time that FPL has before the answer phone kicks in, and the MWI is not the greatest from FPL's side, so what I do is when a call comes in I get get my PBX to 'answer' the call by playing a blank announcement (which doesn't do anything other than answer the call). This basically blocks the FPL voicemail system from every kicking in, because the call get's answered. I then use my internal voicemail system to deal with the call if we don't answer.

In your case, you could easily set it up to play an announcement that you are out traveling, and then just drop the call.

With just what FPL gives you, you won't be able to do what you want, but it is possible depending on how important it is to you. Also a PBX system is not for everyone, although it does bring a whole new dimension to what your phone can do.
