New Customer

Post by kiki9909 »

hello I am currently with bell and I am switching my ISP in a few weeks. I will be getting the Thomson TG784 modem/router which I understand is VoIP enabled. Will it work with freephoneline.ca and if so will it be a stable connection?

thanks

Fongo's sister site, freephoneline.ca uses this router. Sadly, that does not mean that is going to work for you, because it tends to be up to how friendly the firmware is to 3rd party VOIP traffic, and some Thomson routers firmware are downright hostile! You should talk to the new ISP and ask how friendly their service/router is to 3rd party VOIP traffic.

My guess is that the internet connection will be good enough for VOIP, but the supplied Thomson will be useless for VOIP. I am of the opinion the Thomson will be a close to useless router also, but it might be good enough for you. You might have to invest in an ATA like the Obi100, and change the sip port from 5060 to 6060, because the Thomson will likely mess with SIP port 5060, making it useless for 3rd party SIP traffic.

I used to use a TG784 and while it worked, it was 'ok' at best. Having said that my daughter also has one and it has been fine so I guess it just matters what you use it for.

Generally I would say it will be fine.

It will also depend on if you are configuring the number into the thomson 784 modem or if oyu will be using an ATA device plugged into he ethernet ports.

If you are using an ATA, you will need to run a SIP unbind command in the modem to enable the ports for the ATA. Doing this however will essentially disable the ability to use the phone ports (both 1 and 2) on the thomson modem with built in ATA.

If you program in your Fongo number, you can actually use two seperate numbers on that modem provided they are both running off the same SIP server.
