Unable to receive text messages

I have been unable to receive incoming text messages since my unlimited texting plan expired. The Fongo web site says "all incoming text messages are free" so I understand I should be able to still receive messages but not send them even with an expired plan. Why could this be happening (not sure if this makes a difference but I ported my number to Fongo a few months ago). I am not planning to renew my texting plan because I found it to be unreliable (often people didn't receive my messages).
