can't enter digits after call connects - softphone

Post by fongobongo »

Hello all!

Using the softphone ( Freephoneline version: 3.2.7.0 on Windows 8), how do I enter numbers after the call connects? Example:

1) To enter an extension# or to answer menu prompts in a phone tree
2) To dial a PIN to join a conference call or access a voicemail system
etc.

Seems like after the call connects on the softphone, any subsequent numbers entered using either the soft pad or the numbers on my keyboard don't get recognized or transmitted as tones on the call. I can hear the tones on the PC speaker/headset, but the line ignores them.

This is kind of a big issue for me, please help me figure it out, if there is a solution.

Otherwise, so far so good, I just signed up and am looking forward to replacing my land-line finally.

I just signed up and am excited about the service, and soon replacing my old land line.

This sounds like a DTMF issue.
Try changing the setting in Menu (the 4 bar icon thing) > Settings > Other

I use InBand, but try different options to what you have now.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, it sounds like a DTMF issue, where tones are not being generated in-band after the call connects.

So the first thing I looked for was another DTMF setting, and there are only two DTMF types to select from in the free FPL softphone:
1) In-band (tone) - this is what it should be configured to, IMO
2) Info(SIP)

I have tried both settings, a few times, restarting the app with each change - and it makes no difference: Touch tones are not being sent/recognized once the call connects.
I have tried this on both Windows 7 and 8.

NOTE: - I only have the free FPL account at the moment, and have not paid for a VoIP unlock key.
It's becoming clear that this will not work with the free FPL softphone - a disappointment - but I'd love to hear a confirmation from someone otherwise (that it works for them, without having paid for a VoIP unlock code) - and what did the trick.

I use the same FPL Desktop with Win7, and it does generate ring tones punched on the app dial pad when dialing a number, and after the call goes through. DTMF setting is In-band. At times extra ring tones aren't recognized after the call is connected, so I need to repeat, but it works. Do you hear ring tones when dialing a number like 1800xxxxxxx? If not, its your selected audio channel issue, try to reset and troubleshoot it. As ring tones are sent as RTP packets with In-band setting, do you hear the others party voice, and do they hear you well? Also try reinstalling the app, and allow it through PC firewall. I didn't forward ports on the router, and my router firewall is On, but make sure it passes UDP packets. Unlock purchase is not generally required for the app.

Thanks mikesil93,

My FPL desktop app works fine in all respects except this issue.

- Touch tones *are* generated by the app, I hear them fine (they are .wav files loaded into memory from the program folder when it launches).
- I can hear the ring tones when dialing the number to call - the call goes through, and the sound quality is excellent on both ends
- Once the call is connected, I can hear the touch tones being generated by FPL on my end (PC speakers or headset)
- Once the call is connected, the receiver (human on a land or cell line) hears my FPL touch tones very well
- BUT...touch tones are not "recognized" by the listening line, e.g. a phone tree or conferencing system, etc. No amount of repetition or combination of keys works whatsoever.
This is not an intermittent issue. It just doesn't work so far.

I agree that an unlock code is not "generally required for the app", but it may be an assumption that all features work for free.
I had sent a ticket in, but it was automatically closed because they "do not provide customer support for Freephoneline Desktop"

Again - It's becoming clear that this will not work with the free FPL softphone - a disappointment - but I'd love to hear a confirmation from someone otherwise (that it works for them, without having paid for a VoIP unlock code) - and what did the trick.

Thanks for listening.

Hi there,

One good test for you is to take the laptop where desktop app is installed and try it on a different Internet connection.

I have just tested this here in the office and I am able to press digits when I call bank (visa)

Thanks,

I already gave you that confirmation above, not being related to FPL in any way. But you assumed, its not true. :D I recognize this feeling... at times having it myself.

As I said, at times I have to punch the numbers again, if no recognized - it happens when the other party's message is played. Sometime the same number punched from the PC keyboard is recognized better than the number clicked on the app dial pad. Try that.
