best MHZ band for connection?

Post by patratcan »

When using fongo would I technically be better of using a 850 Mhz 3G connection or opting for a 1700 to 2800 lte band? I know the lower you go, the stronger the connection... But the LTE speeds must help with the pings. Anyone ever gave it some thoughts/try?

Thanks!

On paper, LTE is technically better than 3G when it comes to VOIP. LTE introduces much less latency for example. However, in Canada, It should not matter what frequency band or 3G/LTE technology you use for VOIP, when the carrier is shaping the traffic. Traffic shaping introduces jitter, which is usually the cause of a poor VOIP experience.

As for the frequency used, it should not make much difference which one is used. Lower frequencies allow for longer distances, but more towers are preferable, because the limited frequency bandwidth that is allotted to each carrier can be reused more often. Lower frequencies are preferable in rural areas, because there are not that many cellullar devices, so towers spaced farther away can still take care of the volume. In the city, higher frequency towers densely packed are able to accommodate the population there. LTE is preferred because it is more efficient than 3G, though good VOIP though either technology is not a priority, and it shows.
