Choosing Audio Devices

Post by mikesil93 »

Freephoneline has bitten most other softphones on the market by lacking mainstream most simplistic features. Yet this is the ONLY softphone I know of that doesn't have GUI controls allowing to select Mic and Speaker devices on a PC. So default sound devices are chosen instead. However, it seems to be possible to change them by editing Settings file UserSettings.cfg that has:

[speaker]=null
[mic]=null

Can someone give a settings example of other Mic and Speaker devices, one can put here instead of default (null) devices? If you don't know how to name them, pls ask Freephoneline softphone developers, since its obviously possible, and my default audio devices perform other tasks.

From my understanding, being unable to select an audio device was a deficiency of the JAVA programming language that is used to power the Freephone desktop client. It seems the extra code work required to work around that fault was not worth the effort to the Freephone programming team. You might have to stump $50 for SIP setting to use a decent SIP VOIP program to fix your problem.

As a couple of workarounds, one is to get a USB Audio device. The USB makes it the default audio device, of which the Freephoneline client will use. Another option is to run a virtual machine, and set the desired audio device on the virtual machine. When the Freephoneline client is run on the virtual machine, the client will use the audio device selected by the virtual machine

Thanks for your suggestions. I need to setup both Mic and Headphones, and both can't be PC defaults. I do realize it can run on a VM, but its way too much for a softphone. Hope, Fongo staff will provide syntax examples for the above UserSettings.cfg. Putting different devices in that file manually doesn't require Java support, and presumably should work just fine. I don't frequently use the number, so $50 pay for a device selection is not an option.

I don't ask to rebuild the softphone from scratch, just contact its dev and find out audio device settings syntax.
